Older Queenslanders say Enough is Enough on Power Prices

Screen Shot 2014-06-11 at 2.42.21 pmThe FiftyUp Club is launching a Power Price Petition calling on the Queensland State Government to ensure electricity reforms don’t drive up power prices for older Australians.

Electricity prices will rise yet again on July 1, costing the average household an extra $190 a year. This comes after a huge 22.6 per cent rise in 2013.

The FiftyUp Club’s Power Price Petition aims to:

  • Collect 5,000 signatures at www.FiftyUpClub.com
  • Ask the Queensland State Government to ensure that any asset sales do not lead to further price increases for older Australians
  • Ensure Queenslanders fifty and over are not priced out of a basic household necessity.

FiftyUp Club Chairman John Mangos said older Queenslanders have already suffered enough with 50 per cent price rises in the past three years.

“Older Australians are hit harder by price rises, as the majority are on fixed incomes and spend more on food and energy compared to people employed full-time.

“We are deeply concerned that further price increases would hit older Australians particularly hard and make energy, a household necessity, unaffordable for those on fixed incomes.

The FiftyUp Club is calling on the Queensland State Government to make the same assurances as NSW Premier Mike Baird.
