Sticking up for FiftyUps: Age Discrimination Commissioner Susan Ryan

Screen Shot 2014-01-29 at 12.08.21 PMI will begin with a question which may not seem at all odd to many of you FiftyUps. What do volunteer insurance, travel insurance and income protection insurance all have in common? According to Susan Ryan, the Age Discrimination Commissioner, they are all “problematic” for those of us over the age of 50.

Here is what she had to say:

“In my role as Age Discrimination Commissioner at the Australian Human Rights Commission, I hear the stories of older Australians who have had trouble finding income protection or travel insurance that suits them and is affordable.

The pension age is gradually rising to 70, but many income protection policies still cut out at 65. We are seeing a growing number of older Australians who can and want to remain working. Older workers should have the option of protecting their livelihood just like everyone else.

In addition, many Australians may wait until they are in retirement to have free time and money available to travel, yet travel insurance costs increase with age.

While it is lawful and sensible that insurance costs increase with risk, insurers should be looking to respond to the demand of older consumers. It makes good business sense for insurers to get creative and look to offer information and products that are tailored to seniors. Older Australians are important consumers and insurance is a one of the products for which they are looking for a good deals.

I encourage everyone, regardless of their age, to shop around for the insurance that best meets their needs.”

The age caps only act as barriers discouraging older Australians to stay in the workforce longer. Recently a team of us from the FiftyUp Club met with the Commissioner’s office so we could further identify areas in which we can help you, and get the products and services you deserve.

As the Commissioner’s office reminded us negative stereotypes often lie at the heart of age discrimination. No one knows that better than we do at the FiftyUp Club. It’s what drives us to continually advocate on your behalf.

Do you think Australia is an ageist nation?  Or does Australia respect it’s elders? Have your say on the FiftyUp Club forum
