Super funds: the best performers of the past year

Screen Shot 2014-08-13 at 11.28.17 AMIf you’re a Telstra employee or a hospitality worker, you might be lucky enough to be in one of the top-performing Super funds of the year 2013/14.

As this story in the Fairfax press explains, “Another good year for super funds has helped push account balances to almost double what they were 10 years ago.”

The median balanced option returned 12.7%, with the best balanced options coming from Telstra Super Corp Plus Balanced (15.8%), Intrust Core Super Balanced (14%), and UniSuper Accumulation (1) Balanced and AustralianSuper Balanced (equal third with 13.9%).

SuperRatings also does separate analysis of the Top 10 Growth, Australian Shares, International Shares and other investment options over the past year, and for balanced options over the past five years.

SuperRatings’ founder, Jeff Bresnahan, said Australian funds have returned on average 7.2% per annum over 22 years.

“While superannuation funds should be commended for this great result, there remains work to be done to ensure members have the best possible chance to achieve their retirement goals. There is increasing recognition across the industry that some members have been faced with poorer outcomes due to the timing of their retirement or poorly performing products.

“As a result, it is pleasing to see that there is a greater discussion of different member’s needs, particularly those members around retirement, emerging. Going forward, it is vital that superannuation funds continue to better understand the different needs of their members and it is pleasing to see many funds challenging the status quo in this regard.

“A case in point is the need for a greater focus on retirement outcomes, which was highlighted prominently in the interim Financial System Inquiry handed down recently from Chairman David Murray. We’re increasingly seeing funds begin to develop strategies to promote better retirement outcomes for members and this more than anything, will drive the success of the Australian superannuation system going forward.”

Hi everyone the treasurer looks like making changes to super yet again. I think that the club should keep this in mind the changes affect every one of us. Noel Whittacre's column in Sunday 24 August page 57 at face values would seem to me to be a fair and reasonable proposal that we could live with. The article is worth a read. Good luck to us all that common sense prevails cheers Kim Marcus

I flicked MLC years ago for this very reason, started my own SMSF. Disappointing MLC still does not seem to understand what a client is.

I have done very well with super. first you must get a password to allow you to look at what your super is invested in. You can invest your money in as many different options as you wish. Property was once good but I opted out just before the GFC. and went into cash. Not much return there but never lost a cent when everything crashed. Now I;m back in Australian shares and it's going good. I know this may seem a bit confusing but try to manage your investments within the fund your in by constantly checking your own balance and not waiting for some boofhead to call you and suggest you should try something different. That just does not happen... Best of luck.
