Farewell to two of the icons of our generation

John MangosHello Fellow Members,

How sad this week of news. We have lost two acting icons of our generation.

First the news of Robin Williams, a mere 63, taken by his own hand.

Then that of the death of Lauren Bacall at age 89.

We grew up with them both, and we loved them.

Firstly, Bacall. She was never able to shrug off the title of Mrs. Humphrey Bogart, despite being a woman and a star in her own right.

A fashion icon, a proto-feminist and movie veteran of more than 60 films she was enigmatic, charismatic and unique.

And Robin Williams.

Who could forget how he burst onto our screens in 1978 as Mork in Mork and Mindy.

A loveable alien in that role, and in many ways one in his own real life.

As US President Barack Obama remarked: “Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny a president, a professor, a barangarang Peter Pan, and everything in between.

“He was one of a kind.

“He arrived in our lives as an alien – but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit”.

I will always cherish those moments I saw him live on stage at Hollywood’s Comedy Store when I lived and worked as a correspondent in Los Angeles. He would bob up unexpectedly amongst the try-outs to test new material.

Both Bacall and Williams were Oscar winners, but more significantly both won our hearts.

She was the sassy, smart-talking tough broad with cinema presence to burn; he was a comedy genius with a serious acting ability, which continued to astound us and confound us with its depth and profundity.

Their obituaries both filled with brickbats and bouquets (thankfully, mostly bouquets).

It is not for us to judge either of their lifestyles or reputations, just to admire and savour what they gave our generations in the ultimate pursuit of their craft.

And a reminder to us all how much we should cherish the later years of our lives.

Vale Hollywood legends.

And ‘Nanoo Nanoo’.

Just too sad. Here in Australia we have freaky people busting a gut to fight in Syria, while in the US Robin Williams was trying to brighten up our lives with words, actions and funny anecdotes. He was a master of the English language and a huge presence in my life. Lauren Bacall was a fine actress, but she lived a long and intriguing life. Robin didn't give himself the chance. God bless him!

Vale, Robin Williams, may light speed you on your way, You’ve left us for your reasons, but we’re saddened on this day. You were generous of spirit, kind and caring – even so There was no one there to help you when you thought you had to go. I wish you could have waited, I wish you known how much you meant And all the joy that you created, did not help, and so you went. Thanks for bringing us the laughter, thanks for Garp, and Mork from Ork, And we’ll remember, years hereafter how you also walked the walk. Your drive to help humanity, like Patch Adams, who you played Helped us deal with the insanity – of a war, or lives unfrayed. So, rest in peace, dear Robin thanks for sharing your great gift And it’s you I’ll think of often, when my spirits need a lift.

How sad to hear of these losses, especially in Robin Williams' case. It seems that many comedians are "laughing on the outside, crying on the inside".. I remember when English comedian Tony Hancock (Hancock's Half Hour) took his life in a Sydney hotel back in the ' '60s. I was young and it was shocking. At least the incomparable Bacall lived a long and full life. To me, she was Style personified.

During my first experience watching Robin Williams in Mork and Mindy I had tears of laughter rolling down my cheeks. Hearing about his tragic end, once again I cried but with sadness and disbelief. He was a genius.

So sad to lose two great actors and screen icons. Robin Williams enriched our lives with laughter yet he was a great serious actor as well. Lauren Bacall will always be associated with Humphrey Bogart, he was the love of her life and now she will be with him. God Bless both their families, angels will meet them in heaven and we should rejoice in the memories they left us.

My husband and I had the great privilege to meet Lauren Bacall when she was out here doing a book signing at the Grace Bros store in George St Sydney, we bought the book got the autograph and the bonus was that after she was finished she came out of the store without her minders and we were standing on the footpath so excited to have gotten her autograph when she came out and started talking to us can't remember too much of the conversation as we were quite excited and shaken to think that someone of her great stature would just start a conversation with us what a wonderful lady she was and that memory has stayed with us for over 40 years who will ever forget Lauren Bacall we never shall, perhaps she is now with "Bogie" the true love of her life. R.I.P.

Totally gutted of Robin Williams passing. He made us all belly laugh like crazed idiots, my favourite movie of his was Mrs Doubtfire, I cried and cried with laughter throughout that film, totally embarrasing my husband next to me. What a shame he had to leave us so soon, and so alone, so sad. RIP And hope those up there are laughing it up with you and beside you.
