Would you Retire Overseas?

bali-beaches-nusa-duaAustralia has one of the highest poverty rates among over 65s in the OECD, reports the Sydney Morning Herald. In fact, 35% of retirees are at risk of poverty, according to a recent survey on global Pension schemes.

On top of this, we know Australia has an ageing population with more Australians than ever before approaching retirement age.

This leads to some very serious policy questions around the best way to improve retirement savings for future generations. While the Government and policy experts argue and cut deals like this one, where does it leave those Australians who have already retired and are having trouble making ends meet?

Ever thought of moving to Thailand, or maybe Bali? Many retirees have, apparently.

Thousands of Australians 50 and over are packing up and heading overseas to retire, according to the authors of ‘Sell Up, Pack Up & Take Off’.  From South-East Asia, to France and to Italy, it seems many retirees are making their savings go further by moving overseas.

South-East Asia, in particular, is attractive due to the lower cost of living. The authors say that in Malaysia rent is about 80 per cent lower than Sydney and groceries almost 60 per cent cheaper. These represent massive savings for someone on a pension.

Malaysia even offers a special long-term visa for retirees called a Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) Visa.

A similar story emerges in Bali, traditionally a popular holiday destination for Australian tourists. Like Thailand, Bali is emerging as an alternative for older Australians looking to maintain their quality of life in retirement, according to this report from the Herald Sun.

As the money goes further, it seems retirees are living the ‘good-life’ inclusive of book clubs, wine clubs and movie nights – and there’s no shortage of fellow expat retirees.

So is 60 really the new 40? Would you consider retiring overseas?

If you sell up totally, it will be cheaper to live overseas. But as Jennifer says health insurance is expensive. Also only local food is cheap . You will find fresh milk, cheese, steaks and lamb is expensive as they are imported. I was from Malaysia and I would miss all these items. I would only consider a long holiday there

I noticed most young people 50 years ago did not save, most of my friends went out all the time, my husband and I were happy in ourselves & each other so we saved & invested and now the socialist govt., punishes 'good' folk. Go overseas by all means, but make sure just because one has aged does not entitle you to spend tax-payers money overseas. The social security pension is to keep you out of poverty in OZ. You only reap what you sow. I'm a migrant from India, of british descent, 54 years ago, arriving with 5Pounds, but overflowing with discipline & morality, and a lot of 'real pride' in decency.

Jim - tell us more. I already live in pensioner housing and we're all scared that our units will be sold out from underneath us. I don't see why I have to live off Food Banks. I believe I'm entitled to good decent fresh food when I'm a non-drinker and non-smoker (especially cigars) and am very frugal with my money. I've stopped using a clothes dryer, don't use the heater in winter, 'my only entertainment is an occasional movie, don't have Pay TV and pay into a health fund as I accept responsibility for my own health. I don't even bake in the oven anymore so no more treats for grandkids. Life at 68 is getting more and more difficult! If I could retire overseas and live a comfortable life, I'd certainly consider it. Especially I hear that elders are well respected in other countries. Tell me more Jim

Yes I agree Jim very ill informed. My husband had something in his eye in August when we were in Bali we went to a eye specialist hospital. It was free for the Balinese but others had to pay $2.00. It took all of two hours for him to be seem, tested and get medication.

Absolutely I will be moving oversea when I retire. Living in Australia is too expensive and I know I can live in Bali for 250.00 a week. This includes living up in the mountains with my own house, maid and gardner. Going out and eating several times a week. I have been going to Bali and Thailand since 1981 and would not hesitate.

My wife and I operate a small hotel in Pagudpud in the Northern Philippines, having semi-retired oversea and we see many Aussie guests who are "retired" and making their disability or other pension go a lot further. The fact is as Jennifer's comment already makes is about health care. I joke where we are all the time about if you go into a local hospital seriously ill then you are probably going to die. The standard of health care is a major issue but you are not going to get much help. As some news articles state even in Thailand the hospitals are getting choked with senior expats. In most third world countries you will get zero support if in trouble. Sounds exotic but many strings attached, trading one poverty for another in some cases. Add isolation from family, language and cultural issues, much more limited choices in what you buy and eat and so on.

Jennifer from QLD is very, very ill-informed.

John from QLD replied to Jim:

And Jim what is your informed opinion then rather than slamming Jennifer? I live mostly overseas and have done so my last 40 years of working life so feel I am qualified to speak about it. In the end its a personal decision weighing up day to day costs, long term costs, security and so on. But the main thing is don't look at the option through rose coloured glasses, its not for everyone.

Jim
Jim from NSW replied to John:

"its not for everyone". Yes. Of course. So you should be directing your "I live mostly overseas and have done so my last 40 years" comment (nobody cares) to Jennifer who states the following: "Nice to holiday maybe but live there ? Never" Maybe you should "slam" Jennifer's comment if you bothered reading it. That way a nuffie like you won't get "slammed" by me again.

Nerrel, how do I go about it for Italy. Can you point me in the right direction to get started Brian NSW Central coast

Jennifer
Jennifer from QLD commented:

Never. The quality of health care is very questionable. If you are not a resident national the cost of private health insurance makes any savings a moot point. We also have food banks and pensioner housing and lots of other services we can access. Most other countries do not which is why you see so many living on the street begging. Nice to holiday maybe but live there ? Never
