Three loyalty programs that you might not have heard of yet

272883-rewardsWhen we think of loyalty programs we think of Flybuys, Qantas or Everyday Rewards.

But there’s a growing trend amongst smaller retailers and local businesses to band together to create loyalty programs for the little guys.

Some claim to save big bucks on things like petrol. But do they provide real savings, or are they too good to be true?

Certified Locals allows its users to earn points at certain local retail shops and spend them at others including petrol stations. They’ve been building up to “99 cent fuel offer,” which was launched today. Whilst we’d never say no to 99 cents per litre for fuel, the offer was only available for one hour (8am – 9am) at a single Sydney petrol station; Budget Petrol Erskinenville. Perhaps a good bargain for the locals if you are willing to join the queue. Begs the question: how long is too long to queue for cheap petrol? We’ll let you decide.

EasyFuel is a similar concept. You collect fuel discounts on your ‘EasyFuel card’ when you shop at participating shops. When you spend a certain advertised amount at participating stores, you accumulate fuel discounts on your EasyFuel card. You then present your card at a participating retail or service outlet to claim your discount. You could save 5c per litre, 10c per litre or even 20c per litre on fuel. You can watch A Current Affair’s report on the program here. Main limitation is the amount of participating outlets. As they’re independents, there’s never going to be as many.

ShopSmall is an American Express initiative that also encourages shoppers to use their local shops for the month of November. Some might argue that it’s just a smart marketing move to encourage small businesses to accept American Express cards. Perhaps, but if you’re an American Express cardholder, you can get a $10 credit when you spend $20 at participating shops. You can find which small businesses in your neighbourhood are involved by using the map online.

ALDIWho needs a loyalty program when you have ALDI? That’s their motto anyway. In fact, they argue that they keep their prices low by not using expensive merchandising or loyalty programs. Food For thought…

Have you heard of any new loyalty programs that you could share with other members?

I totally agree with Aldi - all the merchandising just supports bonuses for the management tiers - who bully the lower staff if they fail an upsell. You get Mystery shopped - like spying - and if you are really busy and miss - look out. Cruel practice!

Always happy to help people with genuine information about an incredible Loyalty Program for Australians. Spammers are not welcome or tolerated. So if that's you, please don't waste my time with any offers. You will be reported. Looking forward to helping those who are serious about saving and getting cash back on money you are already spending.

Loyalty? I have been with the same Insurance Company for over 30 years. I now have Coles Insurance calling me saying that they are calling on behalf of The FiftyUpClub then using pressure over 20 minutes to try and convince me to change Insurers. I DID NOT sign up for this!

Gary, If you've entered your mobile number when you joined the Club, we allow service providers who are making a special offer to our members to contact you about it. We only provide numbers to particular providers that are offering the relevant current FiftyUp Club offer. We do this because there are always members who miss our alerts about a new offer, despite our best efforts, and the offers are often open for a limited time. All of the above is in the policies and terms that members agree to when they join. The feedback so far has been that members are happy to be contacted. But if you don't want to be contacted about special offers on your mobile, simply remove the number from your profile at FiftyUpClub.com. I apologise for your experience of the phone call and will be sure to pass this onto my team at here and the team at Coles Insurance. Marissa

GARY from NSW replied to Marissa:

The call was to my home phone number, not my mobile. I had no idea that my details would be shared with 3rd parties and as with most people would prefer that to only happen when I requested further information about the offer. This offer was in no way relevant to my needs and it was not simply a call to ask if I were interested. Please advise me how I can ensure that my personal details provided to become a member can be protected from misuse by other parties.

I loathe using loyalty cards. Nothing is free in life. The purchaser pays in the long run. There are only 2 reasons to use them. Everyday Rewards for the now ‘obligatory’ 4c / litre discount. To pacify my wife who’s infatuation with cards like Myers, Flybuys, Qantas, coffee shops, etc. is mind boggling. Finally, most suppliers utilise your personal purchasing information to blast you with more enticements, and like ‘flies to fly paper’ we go.

Warren from NSW...if your wife would like to know more about an excellent (and genuinely free) program that gives more reason's to use it than what you've mentioned, including to help Australia, its companies and workers, let me know!

I beg to differ.. Some Aldi products are cheaper but not all. They are a bit tricky sometimes in the way they package things..

I shop at Coles and therefore use the Flybuys. I always give it back to myself in Credit for Coles spending. Works best for me... Other cards I use are coffee cards at local cafe`'s I find they are great and you get to know the local people & assist local buiness.. Loyalty cards don't cost me anything, that I can see. Therefore, I do not worry about or see them as a problem. I also go to Aldi and shop there. I wouldn't mind a form of loyalty card for there ,too. But guess, won't happen.

If you drive around for loyalty points you are wasting your time. I have been using Flybuys since it started and am quite happy at what I have received. I don't shop at Coles and Safeway for fuel discounts, I give them away to friends. I support the local independents for my fuel! Perhaps more people should do this!

Michael
Michael from QLD replied to Margaret:

I like your thinking regards supporting the local independents. I feel the same. Merchants and members using the same awesome loyalty program I use, all win!
