RBA goes easy, but Health Insurance shoots up again

broken-piggy-bankIf you blinked last Friday afternoon, you’d have missed it.

The Federal Government agreed to put up your private health insurance by an average 6.18%, to take effect from April 1.

But don’t be fooled. Most of us FiftyUps will be paying more than the average.

We conducted a study around this time last year which found we are paying about one-and-a-half times the average, depending on your cover.

I even took a petition of 15,000 of your signatures to the then-Health Minister Peter Dutton, complaining of the lack of transparency. He gave us a good hearing, to be fair, but clearly nothing has changed.

These premium increases are well above the rate of Australia’s inflation, which is currently running at 2.2%.

Consumers Health Forum Chief executive Adam Stankevicius says the annual rise in premiums is “crazy and unsustainable”.

We agree with him, and we also would like to see a Productivity Commission inquiry into private health insurance so we can have a reasoned, rational and evidence-based debate about its future role in our health system.

Meanwhile, we FiftyUps had better find more pennies to put aside, or look for a better deal (see below), because we will be paying hundreds more again this year.

Thankfully the RBA stopped short of cutting rates again today, which would have been disastrous for many older Australians who rely on interest from their savings.

And the federal government has just confirmed they will rethink their GP co-payment plan, which would have hit a lot of us hard.

We have to take these small wins wherever we can get them!

I have my 74 yrs Old mother waiting for Aged Parent Visa which may take 15 yrs to approve. Her health insurance for visitors category has been increased by 70%. This is cruel joke to older people. No one wants to listen and do anything about this. This government has given free run to insurance groups to charge whatever they like without any reasonable explanation. Is there anyone out there to help!!

After 53 years of Health Cover with HCF I have given them the flick! FiftyUp Club suggested (about a month or so ago) looking at NIB Health Insurance. I did just that and got a a tailor-made plan to suit a couple of retirees. I still have top hospital cover and better refunds (than HCF offers) on optical and dental for $20 per month less premium. When HCF was approched before I signed up with NIB they stated in an email that it wasn't their policy to compete with other insurers...???!!!

The politicians don't live in the real world like the majority do, their super retirement funds are just that SUPER. They are planning cuts to everyone else's, not theirs, and loading the Private health costs, we are being taken for a ride every day, and we can do nothing about it. The petition we all signed, obviously fell on the deaf ears of the health minister Peter Dutton, his super will cover these high costs , he will be OK, so why would he care about the pensioners, he won't be one.

I am 70yrs of age, been a member for 30yrs+ since inception of funds! premium went up 17% getting hard to find the extra money. Would love to be able to "tailor" my cover to my needs!!

My wife and I visitited a Dr together to get flu shots, it cost $200 for 4 minutes, not bad money if you can get away with it! Then to only get approx 40 percent back in a rebate for a large outlay per year is unrealistic in my view. Perhaps it's time Australians had the options of selecting their own insurance to cover the majority of all medical costs including medication. Greg western australia

If fed government agreed to a 6.18% increase how come funds are allowed to put up much higher than 6.18?
