Near-tragedy shows the real dangers of high power bills

An almost-tragic story today about a family who nearly died demonstrates what the Club has been saying very publicly about power prices: they're now so high, they're becoming a health issue.

Overnight, a western Sydney family suffered carbon monoxide poisoning from bringing an outdoor charcoal burner into their living room to keep warm. Read the article here

This story and other recent tragic examples are an extreme consequence of what we highlighted two weeks ago:  3 in 5 members we surveyed are not using their heater for fear of the next bill, which is a serious health risk for older Australians and families with children.

The average bill is over $2000 a year and it's doubled since 2007.

Our advice to all billpayers is 3-fold:

  1. Make sure you're on a good plan and you're getting a discount. If your discount is less than 15% in NSW or Victoria, or less than 7% in QLD, you should shop around for a better one. You can start by looking at the Club's special offers with Click Energy. Click here to see the offers on your dashboard
  2. Please, turn off the beer fridge and turn down the temperature on your hot water service before you turn off the heater. Safety first! There are ways to cut your usage without going cold.
  3. Make sure you're getting all the rebates and concessions you're entitled to. These are notoriously under-subscribed, but some low income households and families can get up to about $250 a year.
The NSW Dept of Energy and Resources website has all the info on rebates in NSW but here's a quick Guide for NSW households to make sure you're getting all the rebates and concessions you're entitled to:

$150 FAMILY ENERGY REBATE (Applications open next Wednesday 1 July.)

To be eligible, you must:
  • Be a NSW resident; and
  • Have been assessed by the Federal Department of Human Services (DHS) as being eligible for the Family Tax Benefit (FTB) A or B at any time during the 2013-2014 financial year, and have received an FTB payment in respect of that eligibility; and
  • Be an account holder of an electricity retailer, or a long-term resident of a residential community (caravan or mobile home park), whose name appears on the electricity account for supply to her or his principal place of residence.

$235 LOW INCOME HOUSEHOLD REBATE

To be eligible for the Low Income Household Rebate, you need to:
  • Be a NSW resident; and
  • Be a customer of an electricity retailer, or a resident of a retirement village, or a long term resident of a residential community; and
  • Your name must be on the electricity account for supply to your principal place of residence; and
  • You must hold either of the following cards:
  • A Pensioner Concession Card from the Department of Human Services (formerly Centrelink) or the Department of Veterans' Affairs; or
  • A Health Care Card from the Department of Human Services; or
  • Gold Cards from the Department of Veterans' Affairs marked with:
  • Totally and Permanently Incapacitated or
  • Disability Pension or
  • War Widow or War Widower Pension

$250 COMBINED CAPPED REBATE:

If you are eligible for both rebates above you can receive more support in the form of an annual, combined, capped rebate, currently $250.

So make sure you're not missing out on what you're entitled to.

Meantime, our campaign for lower power bills in NSW continues with over 3500 people so far contributing to our FiftyUp Club Power Price Submission. In the weeks to come we will develop their feedback into a submission to put before the court currently deciding how much NSW electricity network charges power bills will come down by in the next 5 years.

You have and will pay more for your electricity 'cause of the sale of Poles and Wires if like happens all the time, and thru total lack of transparency, a donation to the liberal party is done by the prospective buyer of this infrastructure. Look at what happened recently, under another war monger of Libs at the helm: Howard the Coward, this is serious stuff! How far will they go, the Libs to get their party funded, to get elected? Now LIBS VOTERS ELECTED A PM whose political party IS financed in part by the ITALIAN MAFIA: the funding of political parties is, like the rest with the Libs not at all transparent (lawful perhaps and I am not so sure when the Italian Mafia funds them... but...) and we must ask for an overhaul of the rules of such funding. Furthermore, the son of a prominent Mafia godfather was given work experience at the Australian embassy in Rome that had the potential to compromise international police operations. Then Immigration Minister, Amanda Vanstone, granted Frank Madafferi a visa. Security sources said the work-experience placement was a major security lapse. Ms Vanstone want us to believe that John Howard, herself and the rest of the Libs act time to time, make decisions on humanitarian grounds (in that instance, about the impact of deportation on Madafferi's family) !! But it came after police warnings Madafferi was a violent criminal who posed a major risk to the community. Ms Vanstone's predecessor, Philip Ruddock, had previously ordered Madafferi's deportation because of his lengthy and serious criminal record. To my understanding, the Libs are in bed with the Italian Mafia who at every opportunity finance their political party and YOU, Libs voters voted in a PM whose party IS financed in part by the Italian and Australian Mafia. As happened recently in France, Ms Vanstone must explain herself before a court of Law and some light must be shed on where the Libs find the money to get elected.

Play the ball, Warren, NOT the player, you troll... Your greedy Libs, in bed with the Mafia! Desperate and unethical, as always! The incredible saga of Amanda Vanstone and the Mafia is becoming one of those political episodes which gathers more momentum as each day passes. As if it was not enough to be the ultimate "remedy against love" ...

... why not after all, if John Howard Liberals took money from the Exclusive Brethren, then why would alleged Mafia dollars be refused?

Hello Margaret, Thank you for your comment. Normally, I would agree. But in my case, I am originally a Queenslander, having returned here after 14 years in Bendigo, Victoria. Most of my family now live near here. When I moved down there, Queensland generally was a more economical place to live than Victoria. How things change. It probably has a lot to do with a succession of Labor governments over spending. The following LNP lot were not much better though. I didn't mention specifics in my original comments, but there is a huge difference in health care. In Victoria, with type 2 Diabetes, everything is free, from the blood/sugar monitor to free check-ups by Diabetes educator, dietician, pediatrist and eye specialist. Here you are on your own, should you desire these services you have to organise it yourself. It was quite a shock to return to Queensland and discover the adverse changes to the cost of living. Again, thanks for your comments.

I noticed there was no pensioner rebate on my electricity bill from energy Australia. I switched to them from the old Integral Energy. At the time I conducted the transfer over the phone with my latest bill in front of me. I cannot imagine I would have not said I was a pensioner, and in fact my birthdate would indictate this could be a distinct possibility. Anyway it seems I have never been accorded this discount, and according to the person I spoke with they were unable to credit arrears because of government regulations! I'm alerting others to the fact that that phone transactions give no proof of actual transfer details, and to demonstrate that even though I consider myself fairly canny with my money, we are fodder for the salespeople of our utilities.

Hold on. Please everyone take a deep breath. There's apparently some confusion with more than one person now posting under the 'Anonymous' title. Di from ACT, there was little, if any, 'nastiness' & rudeness on this site until the recent arrival of someone posting under the name: 'Anonymous from NSW'. He posts/rants about all sorts of topics (not just the topic under discussion) and his style is rude and abrasive. People appear to be becoming fed up with his attacks and unfortunately, some are responding in kind. Hence the rudeness you are seeing. Then you began posting under: 'Anonymous from ACT' and there has been some confusion between you and the other 'Anonymous'. Since 'Anonymous from NSW' began posting, member comments here seem to have greatly decreased since it's impossible to have any sort of reasonable discussion. So please don't judge us all by what's currently happening.

I am becoming sorrier by the day that we moved from Victoria to Queensland to live. Everything is more expensive, not just electricity, but all insurances, car registration almost double, health care costs, petrol, the list goes on. We have to survive now without health or life insurance, a pension does not allow such luxuries. When is FiftyUp going to look into Queensland costs? Oh! Petrol; many of us who have European cars, even cheaper economy ones, must use minimum 95 octane fuel, if you can get it. Most servos stock only 98 octane which is even dearer. Why do we have to apparently subsidise cheap fuel for regular unleaded users? Surely there is no up to 13c extra cost in refining the higher grade fuel? If the cost of moving wasn't prohibitive we would move back to Victoria and put up with the lousy climate.

Like many I have spoken to you have discovered things are not always as they appear. I come across many a visitor to the town in which I exist in the Blue Mountains, waffling on about how they intend to move to the area when they retire. My advice to them is try to do a house/unit/flat exchange, for as long as possible,or for at least until the novelty wears off and reality is apparent. They may decide this is exactly where they would like to spend the rest of their life, however if things are not as they thought they would be they have saved them-self all the costs associated with moving, especially if selling property is involved. It can be far easier to leave an area then it is to re enter that area. TRY BEFORE YOU BUY WHEN EVER POSSIBLE.

Di from ACT - Neroli, thank you, apology accepted. Maybe if more people stood up to the cyber bullies, the tone of this site might change and more people would be encouraged to make a contribution. Name-calling and abuse is non-productive, and some people use it as a tool to intimidate others and shout down their opinions. I was hoping to learn something of other people's experiences and opinions on this site, but there must be many out there who are too afraid to express anything, for fear of abuse. Let's play nice folks.
