Last chance for consumers to have their say on electricity prices

Consumers have 2 more days to have their say on soaring electricity prices in NSW, before they have their “day in court” on Thursday.

The tribunal regulating competition in Australia is opening its doors to the community and asking them what they think about electricity prices.

The 127,000-member FiftyUp Club is now canvassing consumers’ views and preparing a submission on their behalf.

Over-50’s particularly feel the pinch from hefty electricity bills. More than half (52%) say they are afraid to run their heater for fear of big winter bills.

In the past ten years the only cost that has gone up more than electricity (up 116%) was tobacco (up 127%), but electricity is a basic utility.

“The FiftyUp Club will be fronting the tribunal and will submit the views of its members for consideration in setting electricity prices,” Christopher Zinn, spokesperson for the FiftyUp Club said.

“The over 50’s are hurt most by increases in utilities, like electricity and gas, and any fluctuations can impact on their standard of living.”

“We live in a country where no one should be falling through the cracks in winter or going cold because of financial strain. Unfortunately this is all too common.”

Networks NSW is fighting power price cuts of $106-$313 proposed by the Australian Energy Regulator, saying they are not in consumers’ long-term interests.

The networks argue the cuts will lead to more blackouts and will not allow for adequate bushfire mitigation in regional areas.

There are only days left for consumers to take part in the FiftyUp Club Power Price Submission. Join for free at fiftyupclub.com for more details.

Thank you so much for keeping an eye on this PROBLEM. At July 1 2015 media info said through legislation Gov had lowered the prices by Approx $350 pa for consumers, ( or did I dream that info) now regulators are taking it back and then some. I cannot believe as I have gotten older winter time has come to mean - make a decision - eat or heat. What is even worse because of renewable energy such as wind farms driving costs through the roof, they are mostly foreign owned so while I suffer the money goes overseas. Pretty fed-up with watching my country being given away. Lyn from NSW

None of our utilities should be run by private companies. They should be controlled by Government, and then we as the public can voice our opinion at the voting polls come election time.

Why don't we look around the world compare prices AND MANAGEMENT & determine if the Aust system is ripping us of both in production & management costs. My Daughter lives in Vancouver Canada - She lives in a largish 2 bedroom unit with her young daughter. Her bill $75/ quarter & she has serious Winter heating needs which we do not experience here in Aust. Why is This So????? Can't we do as well as the Canadians? Its similar with their health care costs. I think we need to buck up & get our arse in gear!!!

privatisation does not keep costs down, in fact the opposite occurs. Its time for these crap arguments to be shown up for what they really are. Profiteering mongrels.

There are two main issues that should be addressed by government. The first is the Renewable Energy Target scheme. This is a giant rip-off of the ordinary householders in Australia. Eventually people will wake up to the fact that there is absolutely no danger from the current levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere nor will there be even if they increased by as much as 10 times. In fact the current higher levels of carbon dioxide in the air (compared to 150 years ago) are improving crop yields. This is because nearly all of the so-called global warming of the last 150 years was from natural causes and was part of the natural cycle from the last little ice-age known as the Dalton Grand Minimum. Also because the sun is progressively going deeper into a major long-term slump in its magnetic strength the remainder of at least the first half of this century most people living in middle and high lattitudes will continually experience little ice-age temperatures type weather conditions. The current slump in the sun has already been named the Eddy Grand Minimum. So we will need cheaper and more reliable power in the near future not very expensive renewable power to enable people to get through the naturally occurring changing climate. The second issue is the gold plating of the electricity grid. The pay back to the Electrical Trades Union for the very successful "Your Rights at Work" electricity pole campaign during the 2007 election was to provide conditions that feather-bedded the poles and wires workers and enabled that union to become much stronger. The reduction in productivity of the poles and wires workers (estimated at around 75% to 85%) has resulted in huge increases in the costs of the electricity grid. That is what householders are now paying for. It is the pay back to the ETU for assisting K Rudd's Labor to power in 2007. And we will pay for this forever unless this current government has the guts to put an end to it.

Just another bunch of service providers continuing their grab for more and more money. True saying " Money is the root of all evil John NSW"

There should NOT be annual rises in electricity . I am fed up of all these greedy electricity companies that once you sign up with them , then shortly after ,up goes the price . We use to buy our electricity from Essential Energy and our price paid was the same as Sydney pricing . Now it is far higher because of the little greedy electricity companies that have entered the market place and we are forced to go with one of them .Regional areas suffer the most , and we are forced to pay a much higher price than Sydney or Melbourne > That is not fair ! Regional areas do not get the same salaries or jobs as what the major cities have and unemployment is high in Regional areas . The price of electricity should and must remain stable , not upped every year !

So much for election promises from a Liberal government who apparently is backing this challenge. It appears they tell more lies than Gillard. But they will argue that Liberals don't tell lies.

What happened to our cheaper electricity and gas prices as promised? Australians should be first priority. Thanks for all your efforts in fighting for the ordinary people.
