Open letter to the Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon Malcolm Turnbull

Dear Malcolm,

As a sixty year-old who is now our prime minister may I congratulate you, at least on behalf of some of our 130,000 members, on your sudden elevation and commend the benefits of joining the FiftyUp Club.

The snap poll alongside this letter on the website may give you some idea as to your current popularity amongst the members who have previously told they are predominantly coalition supporters.

We’re in the midst of the Fair Go For Fifty Ups campaign which seeks to highlight the cost of living issues, pressures and even solutions facing one in five Australians.

Given we are a powerful electoral force and issues such as retirement incomes, tax and GST, health spending and insurance are the bread and butter of politics I thought you might be interested in some interim findings.

It’s our intention to bundle up the 16,000 responses so far, which include some robust statistics and pithy comments, and present them to politicians in Canberra next month. Perhaps you’ll be free?

When it comes to state politicians in particular eyeing off an increasing the GST we are clearly split down the middle.

While 46% say absolutely no change to the system another 46% do support increases to the 10% rate and/or to the base of goods and services on which it is levied.

Another contentious issue under increasing debate is whether the family home should be included in the pension assets test.

When asked what policy was most important to their family situation 42% nominated the family home exemption followed by 15% choosing no changes to superannuation taxes.

Given your predecessor promised there’d be no changes to super in his administration many of us might be forgiven for wondering if this remains the case.

Finally with health lobby groups calling for a review of private health insurance, and the government reportedly due to call one soon, we’d love to know where you stand.

When you were last in charge of the party in 2009 you may recall using your budget reply speech to reject Labor’s means testing of this insurance.

The scrapping of the means test remains seemingly unaffordable but it would be popular with the 51% of our respondents finding it hard to afford but ‘not prepared to go without it’.

Another 16% have had to cancel their cover because it has become a ‘luxury’.

Please consider the above and we shall forward the final poll results as soon as they are in,

 Yours Sincerely,

Christopher Zinn

Leave the GST as it is. Even some people on low incomes may get help with it, most won't. I can't see how raising the GST will help business either if people can't afford their products or have to make cutbacks. Talk of raising it to 15 % is sheer lunacy and will drive many voters to seek an alternative government. To punish people on low incomes in this way when our failing economy needs people to spend (responsibly) just does not make sense as their rate of spending is the highest in the income groups. 457 visa is grossly misused. High skills jobs such as doctor and specialist jobs in minnig should be extreme limit for job opportunities people who collecting trolleys are not the workers we need to import on 457 visas. Australian jobs for Australians first.Neville Chivers Qld.

I have reserved judgement on Mr Turnbull as the first time he was prime minister he was out of his depth, I sincerely hope that he will do a better job of Prime Minister this time around.

You meant 'leader of the Opposition' and not the PM Deirdre.

1. Revise their entitlements. As well as their compulsory super. Why is their super much higher then the rest of the working population? 2. Anyone receiving unemployment benefits should be made do some form of public service work {say 20hrs} every week. There is nothing for free in this world. So why should they just be given money for nothing? 3.No more hand outs after the 3rd child. Do you not know people are just making a living out of having children. Then how many of these children end up on the streets or in care or are abused. 4.YES increase the GST. It's a no brainer. 5. Compulsary for anyone earning over say $80,000 for a single and $120,000 for couple to have private health insurance.

Warren from NSW replied to Jayne:

Yes Jayne. Interesting input that needs some refining but the principles are OK.

Preserve jobs now for Australian born citizens before bringing to Australia anyone who we don't have a job for. Australian first for jobs. clear. From Qld

Quite xenophobic Neville when the majority of children born in Australia are from a parent, or parents not born in Australia. Also our immigration policy caters for over 130,000 immigrants per year on average. Then there is the 457 legislation than brings in qualified workers for tasks that Australians have the first choice, but don’t or won’t apply.

Why is the interest on savings taxed ? Particularly when the interest rates are so low.We are encouraged to gamble on the stock exchange with our superannuation but the interest on savings doesn't even cover the devaluation of our money. Remember what a dollar bought 20 years ago and see what it can buy now. There would obviously have be a limit but banks do require to have a cash reserve I am sure that they cannot have too much.

I am a self funded retiree n don't get as much as the govt pension and yet have no added benefits I cant even afford to pay all my bills at the moment let alone buy good food! I don't like the idea of blugding off the govt and so I suffer the consequences! I should like to remain anonymous thanks

I am not, nor will I ever be a Coalition, Liberal or National supporter, nor am I swayed by the sacchrine-sprinkling razzle-dazzle currently in operation. The recent coup was/is definitely Animal Farm politics, which invites humiliation & embarrassment to the people of this beautiful continent - absolute sacrilege!

I think the members of parliament should revise their entitlements.. how can they collect all the freebies they get & expect us to "tighten our belts".

Noelene from Qld. Malcolm, go back and listen to your speech in Parliament when Julia Fuillard deposed Kevin Rudd." Et te Brute?" I hope all your cronies realise that what goes around, comes around. Who will be in the line for the next round of back-stabbing?
