The top ten postcodes where paying bills are causing strain on over 50’s

Older residents from Campbelltown, New South Wales and Hervey Bay, Queensland are under the most strain when it comes to paying household bills like private health insurance, electricity bills and council rates, according to a survey of over 50s.

The FiftyUp Club has released the top ten postcodes experiencing household bill strain from a survey of 15,000 members nation-wide.

Postcodes in Victoria including 3199 (Frankston) and Berwick (3806) also showed significant bill strain.

TOP 10 SUBURBS EXPERIENCING BILL STRAIN

And they are not alone; up to 60% of older Australians across the nation suffer stress paying household bills with private health insurance being the hardest to pay according to a survey of over 50s.

The bills they find hardest to pay include;

  • Health insurance (29%)
  • Electricity (22%)
  • Rates (12%)

The 15,000 respondents to the Fair Go for Fifty Ups campaign also listed the sacrifices they had to make to pay day-to-day bills with 47% raiding savings, going into credit card debt and cutting back on essentials such as food and clothing in order to foot their bills.

“We asked older Australians about a range of cost of living pressures and they clearly cited stress over meeting bills as a number one difficulty. Perhaps given the demographic their concern over the cost of private health insurance made it the hardest of all the bills to pay,” said FiftyUp spokesman Christopher Zinn.

Christopher Zinn appeared on Channel 7 News in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney discussing the bill strain expressed by FiftyUp Club members.

The FiftyUpClub.com is a consumer network with more than 129,000 members aged 50 and over. The Fair Go for FiftyUps campaign was launched to gauge the national mood around how older Australians are affected by rising costs and which government policies can help.

Iam 68 living on the age pension which does not cover my daily living expenses, and I will be forced to dip into my home equity just to survive. My pet hate is local councils which I have to support from my meagre savings but receive no benefits. I just recently asked for minor road access upgrade and was promptly advise my suburb of Cowan has very low priority and my request would not be considered for a further three years. You have to joking! My quarterly rates are over $300, I should not be paying a cent, my assets are nil my pension my only income and what do I get in return? Councils in my opinion are just training grounds for would be politicans

I live in the Fraser Coast Region where the per capita income is $270 per week and unemployment over 10%. Council rates are completely out o step with the salaried income of the region, the same comments apply to all other charges from insurance compnies, power and water.

I have to agree on paying Rates They are dearer where I live 10k's outside Campbelltown, than Campbelltown. We don't have curb & guttering so don't have all the benefits of Campbelltown.

It could be impossible for any Govt. to raise seniors pensions substantially with so many other others needing welfare assistance? Of course they are hoping for more "well heeled" self funded retirees. However, from where I am standing there may well me less! Would it be helpful if the rules were changed and seniors are able to earn more without affecting their pensions? After all we all know about the cash society that is already a happening thing! And that is not only pensioners!

It is not our place in this life to judge others however when Turnbull was put into power by pollies who do not know the meaning of TEAM nor LOYALTY to a Leader whom the Nation elected I wonder if any of them realise God must be very sad as most people in Australia have also forgotten Him. Turnbull is not the chosen Leader by the Nation so please let us not be that dumb that we believe that the Pollies will now be so terrific that everything will be coming up roses.

Well paying those bills has just become much easier. Last week one of our wonderful pollies was on television stating that there was no deduction of pension payments IN FACT as of Sunday, the the pension would increase. Now I thought ..why not tell us by how much, for singles and how much for couples, that would be SO SIMPLE and save so many looking it up. Well this morning I did 'look it up. This morning I found out why the actual amount of increase was not mentioned. This morning I found out that the INCREASE including rent allowance for a single is $4 per week. YEP, $4, no wonder our little pollie was so proud. Probably said no more as he was afraid his jealousy would be evident. Probably out there right now lobbying for pollies to receive an increase of such magnificence. So there you are whingers,"all our troubles Lord, soon be over."

What a insult $4.00 increase they should be ashamed of themselves, bet they give themselves a much larger increase!

I think it is very wrong that essential utilities like power and water should be privately owned and operated for profit. The various governments sold off these utilities for short term gain, telling us they would be more efficiently operated. And now that power prices have skyrocketed and people are using less power they put up the daily service charge to maintain profits.

Christine
Christine from NSW replied to Ivan:

Thought I heard some where that these prices were to come down??? I'm still waiting, considering our power has gone up by over $600.00 per year and we have cut down on power usage. We survive on tank water so every time a tap is turned on it uses power, so we do this less, has not made a difference. Guess I'll have to keep waiting for a decrease, probably turn to bone while waiting!

Glenda
Glenda from NSW commented:

We need to remember that "cashed up" Malcolm Turnbull is completely out of touch with reality and how we, the common people and strugglers live; he is too wrapped up in his own ambitions, his love for money .... lots and lots of it, and his own mix of aspirations. Lets not forget that it was not long ago that he was actually thinking of joining Labor!! Add to that, he has well and truly done the snake-in-the-grass Labor thing, backstabbed honest Tony Abbott. Compare Tony Abbott to Malcolm Turnbull .... there is no comparison when it comes to loyalty for Australia and the Australian people. Tony was there for all of us; yes, he made mistakes but given a bit more time, things could have turned around in a positive was for us pensioners. BUT no .... now we have this snake-in-the-grass, greedy, self opinionated Turnbull, and I do believe that with him at the helm, we are in for an even rougher time. So Fifty Up Club, lets continue the push for seniors to be recognised for the good that we have done, the taxes we have paid, our right to have and to keep whatever little we have worked hard for all our lives. Even though he is so wealthy, the second wealthiest parliamentarian (after Palmer), Malcolm Turnbull - the ever greedy, opportunistic millionaire, still saw fit to claim $10 per time his wife stayed over in Canberra with him in his luxury Canberra penthouse. Compare that to humble Tony and his wife Margie..... and I would go further to say - compare that to Centrelink's close police-ing of every dollar that we pensioners have so that the "thresholds" are not crossed. What sort of a leader is this Malcolm Turnbull?? I believe he is not a people's leader .... and to take away Tony Abbott's benefits because he was ousted just 4 days short of a two years leadership, is absolutely despicable of Turnbull.

Ivan
Ivan from QLD replied to Glenda:

Their wages and conditions are determined by the Parliamentary Remuneration Tribunal. If their "entitlements" are legal then obviously they will claim them. John Howard refused to live in the Lodge and made Kirribilli House his official residence costing taxpayers millions, eg $7500 each time he took the one hour flight between Sydney and Canberra. Tony missed out but I think he will be far from starving and will not be worrying about his power bills!

Warren
Warren from NSW replied to Glenda:

I would rather an economic individual like PM Turnbull call the shots than a rant like yours that makes no sense.

Cecilia
Cecilia from NSW commented:

Is this going to be a revolving musical chair like the late Labor Party? I hope not. What was purported to be wrong with Mr. Abbott? A decent able man who thought more about his people than Mr. Turnbull who is there for himself? Mind you I do quite like Mr. Turnbull, but not the way he went about to enthrone Mr Abbott. I hope he does not forget what a life we have to eke out as pensioners.
