Power of campaign for over 50s delivers exclusive offers

A campaign of more than 50,000 people has resulted in exclusive new discounted home and car insurance offers for people over 50.

The MA50+ campaign, launched in February 2016, was created to encourage insurers to offer a better price on insurance for over-50s – some of the industry’s most loyal, safest customers.

The Woolworths Insurance offers, exclusive to fiftyupclub.com.au, include:

  1. Save up to 35% when you purchase a combined Woolworths Home and Contents Insurance policy online≈
  2. If Woolworths Car Insurance isn’t cheaper than your current comparable renewal notice, they’ll beat it and if you’re 50 or over you’ll get a $50 Woolworths Gift Card* as well.

There are also exclusive discounts on Life and Travel Insurance from other providers with full details available at www.fiftyupclub.com.au

It’s free to join the FiftyUp Club and the Woolworths Insurance offers will remain open until 28 April 2016.

FiftyUp Club spokesman Christopher Zinn said the campaign was a win for Australians aged 50 and over.

“FiftyUps are loyal customers and quite often they’re lower risk customers, especially when it comes to car insurance. The big issue with this group is that by staying with the same insurer year after year you may end up paying more than you need to compared to if you look around for a better deal.”

“We invite people to either use the offer to switch, or to speak to their insurer to see if they can match the deal. Either way, what we want is for people over 50 to look around and see if they can do better,” said Zinn.

Christopher Zinn said FiftyUp Club research shows 75% of those who have switched insurers before ended up saving money, with half saving $100 or more.

I fail to see the benefit, considering that these insurance discounts are for a very limited time only. What about people wishing to avail of the discount who have only recently renewed their insurance policy? Of course they could cancel their policy, but doing so would incur a penalty that would wipe out any discount offered by the new insurer. Also, last year it was Coles insurance that you were promoting, this year it's Woolworths, next year will be - who knows? Unless you can sign up service providers that will offer discounts to over 50s on a perpetual basis, the whole thing becomes pointless.
