A surprise call from my sister Liz

It’s not often my sister Liz telephones but she wanted to share news about her car insurance and our FiftyUp Club campaign.

She’d got a quote from Woolworths Insurance and then wisely went back to her original insurer, which specialises in older drivers, and asked for a better offer.

It was tempting to stay put but she did the maths and found the saving was too compelling not to switch.

Liz is not alone.

Many of you have found it pays to compare different insurance offers for both home and contents and comprehensive car cover and found the campaign made it easier.

So below is a small selection of the many comments you have posted with many people claiming savings of some hundreds of dollars^:

  • "My current insurer with 30 years loyalty discount and multi-policy discount was more expensive as they don't take into account the low distance I drive annually and the fact that the car is garaged ... of course I changed."
  • "Happy to have taken up the insurance offer as it has saved me a bit of cash. I found the switchover extremely easy and quick."
  • "I found FiftyUp Club very helpful and found a competitive cheap car insurance quote for my car. Thank you for your wonderful website and it nice to see someone on our side fighting for us."
  • "So I am 52 this year. I work full time and pay rent all the bills and have neve been offered a discount for anything so I thought I would give it a go - it was easy. The person on the phone was great and it was a good price, I also will be sent a voucher so that's nice."
  • "I got a quote from Woolworths Insurance online and then contacted my current insurer so that they could have the opportunity to reconsider their renewal premium. Surprisingly, they were happy to cancel the direct debit - no questions asked. While I was disappointed with their customer retention strategy (or lack thereof), I was happy to save $50 on my annual premium.”

It’s very encouraging to hear we are making a difference and the process is running smoothly for people trying to switch. We’ve also heard from some people who haven't been able to get a quote for Home Insurance online. If this is you, call Woolworths Home Insurance on 1300 655 352 and they will be able to help.

^ Savings based on cover options, excess chosen, risk rating, and multi-policy discounts. Current March 2016. Benefits differ between policies so choose what is right for you.

Woolworths Home and Woolworths Car Insurance are issued by The Hollard Insurance Company Pty Ltd ABN 78 090 584 473 AFSL No. 241436 (Hollard). Woolworths Limited ABN 88 000 014 675 AR No. 245476 (Woolworths) acts as Hollard’s Authorised Representative.

I had Home & Contents with Hollard for years and switched to Budget because of a lower premium for the same cover. I can't see me changing back in a hurry but I may give them a chance to compare when it comes up early next year. I recently changed car insurance to NRMA and now insure both our vehicles for less than I paid for one previously. I will compare Hollard with that as well when it is due. I also changed my Health Insurance to NIB and got a better deal than I had from HCF and saved a little there. Hope this comment helps. Perhaps the FiftyUp club should negotiate special discount rates for members to take advantage of bulk buying power as some large companies negotiate special rates for their employees (Corporate Rates). Just a thought.

Robyn from NSW hit the nail on the head ... the switch to cheaper insurance deals seem attractive but are only for the first year ... once they sign you up they hope you will automatically pay the renewal premiums... and these can be a rip off. You really have to shop around every year ... can be a damn nuisance. If an insurance company ever went back to the old fashioned loyalty bonus and offered renewals at the cheapest possible price (without having to phone them and ask) they will get a lot of our business back.

Yes -- we too switched to Woolworths Home & Contents Insurance after hearing Alan Jones extolling its value on Radio 2GB - and immediately found a near $300 saving which , as self funded retirees on diminishing incomes , was a savings bonus we had not expected . Our electricity supplier was also changed two years ago and so we are very happy with the power of the people and what you are achieving for us .. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK !!

I also tried Woolworths for Car Insurance and found them very expensive. I am still getting other quotes however so far if I choose APIA I will save $300. How can one explain this huge difference in quotes? Judith from Kew

Obviously selective about your Post Code when it comes to quoting on building and contents insurance - "Unfortunately, due to our underwriting guidelines we are unable to provide you cover at this address". Rod from Cairns FNQ

Try APIA as I was having the same issues trying to get quotes for Cairns

Liz must ensure that she checks out other Insurers after 12 moths. I Changed to Coles (Red Car ad) When the next renewal was due, it was much cheaper to go back to my original Insurer (who caters for over 50s). Pays to be on the ball all the time.

My car Insurance went up $21 without any reason, so I shopped around and found cheaper Insurance for exactly the same cover, when I rang my Insurance company to cancel with them they asked me why, when I told them they came back to me and offered me the same deal after I showed them the quote, and I am very happy to say I saved $75.00 per annum

I tried Your HCF Health Insurance and they were $463.00 per year Dearer than Medibank Private. I find this very strange . Malcolm.

I know it is not car insurance, but my policy with the largest health insurance provider went up by 11.5% with Top Hospital and Extras package. The formula which shows an "average" rise is a misnomer as many policy rates for the basic cover did not increase but the older one gets the more one pays and the higher the rises, just when we are going to need health cover the most. Sadly, the comparison rate did not warrant a change of provider. But, that's life. Thanks for your continued efforts in the continued fight fr a better deal. Cheers, Greg @ Bundaberg
