Meet FiftyUp Member Helen

A big welcome to our new members from SA and WA including Helen.

We asked Helen a few questions about why she joined the club…Click here to see what she said….

Why did you join the FiftyUp Club?

Today Tonight featured the 50Up Club in a segment recently, which I found very interesting. I felt it was a great idea for people like me. I think sometimes we get forgotten and it's wonderful to know there are things we can access and that are helpful and informative. Belonging to a club where we have 'a voice' is always comforting

What are the biggest regular bills you struggle with?

Health insurance and electricity are always a regular and costly outlay but obviously necessary, so need to be budgetted for.

Do you have any tips for fellow club members on managing your money?

Being mindful to turn off unused appliances at the power point, purchasing groceries when 'on special', shopping on allocated discount days for seniors, using our wonderful free public transport during allocated period times and filling up the car when the discounted petrol cycle is at it's lowest!

How do you like to spend your spare time?

I enjoy an hour power walking every day to keep my mind and body healthy/active. I enjoy going to the movies, spending and sharing time with my family & friends. I housesit and enjoy the change of environment & scenery and do voluntary work when I'm able.  I love travelling and do so whenever possible.

What's the best thing about being over 50?

I love retirement and being able to make my own choices of how to spend each day. I love the opportunities it presents with a 'drop & go' cruise at a much reduced price, a last minute luncheon with a friend, helping out family and friends in a crisis or babysitting. Life is great and I'm so fortunate to have all my family and friends, to live in this wonderful country and to be given so many opportunities to me and my age group, including the 50Up Club. I'm truly blessed and grateful. Carpe Diem, seize the day!

Hi Ruby. Thank you for your warm comments. My life and retirement is not how I imagined it to be. Like everyone else I have to budget, use a coupon or take advantage of special offers. Lunch is not always 'out' but sharing at friend's homes. Because of loss of family and friends, I believe it is imperative to make the most out of everyday and enjoy it accordingly. I am sincerely grateful for all I have & blessed with whom I do share it. Best wishes, Helen.

Hi Barbara. Thank you for yr feedback. Life is hard for most of us. I try to be a positive person and make the most out of life. I have not had things as easy as it reads now being single after 34yrs of marriage and the loss of a younger and older sister. I try to take advantage of every opportunity that presents itself to enjoy myself. I have worked all my life and now feel like I have earned my retirement. I'm very sorry things are so tough for you but that is the beauty of signing up, with not only 50Up Club, but any offers that come our way and utilising them to our benefit. I wish you good health, peace and to be surrounded by people who love and care for you. Cheers, Helen

Helen is lucky with enough money to pop off on cruises and lunches whenever she wants. Why not interview pensioners who struggle to survive - no holiday since 1993, forced to pay for everything on credit cards for groceries, petrol, medical bills, dental work, prescriptions, insurances, rates, fees, MYKI etc. which in turn forces one to access a very small 'female' superannuation to pay that credit card or suffer horrendously high bank interest payments as well. Forced to remain inside for days to save money (no heating or air-con), doing most washing by hand in sink/bucket until enough money found to afford the laundromat. It is nice hearing of some over 50's memberships who have it so good.
