Energy To Get The I-Tunes Treatment?

New research out this week confirms the results of our FiftyUp Club survey that a “worryingly high number” of households believe there are no alternatives to their current energy provider and that even if there was, switching is too hard.

John Rolfe from News Corp reports the lack of innovation and disregard from current electricity companies for customer needs, has created an opportunity in the market for the likes of Apple, Google and even Telstra to step up. It’s described as a revolution similar to the one that recast music and video retailing.

CEO of Energy Consumers Australia (ECA), Rosemary Sinclair said “Apple, Google, Telstra and others had identified that there is friction in the market and that they can start addressing consumers’ needs”.

The ECA was set up last year by the federal, state and territory governments to be the people’s voice on power national advocate for power consumers.

Ms Sinclair said “the music industry had a business model that wasn’t what consumers wanted but didn’t want to change. So it was changed for them. Ditto the video industry. They come in with innovation that is centred around consumers’ needs and that is the major thing they do that changes the culture of the entire industry.”

Apple Energy LLC was set up by the tech giant only last month. Google meanwhile paid $US3.2 billion ($A4.3 billion) in 2014 for the home energy management business Nest.

Ms Sinclair also cited Mojo Power and Pooled Energy for bringing new approaches to the market. Mojo recently began selling NSW consumers a monthly “EnergyPass” that gives access to wholesale electricity rates while Pooled targets pool owners with a bundled deal of maintenance, chemicals and electricity.

At a clean energy summit in Sydney this week, the head of the Australian Energy Market Commission called on the sector to stop its navel-gazing and instead focus on consumers.

AEMC chairman John Pierce said “The traditional, centralised energy supply model is being challenged by new products and services, including renewables like wind and solar — but the current debate is inward focused (and) all about the industry.”

Here in Mackay Qld your only choice is Ergon energy so that can charge what ever they like as long as the Government is happy. We are paying more than others so any system would be a huge improvement.

Would definitely like to see more competition in the electricity market. Living in Bundaberg it only has one supplier, ergo no discounts and no competition. Please bring it on as we are not the only rural areas who would love to see a change. Thanks, Lorraine.

If all solar power producers & suppliers to the grid turn off the system on 1st Jan 2017. Who will be able to supply the power required for NSW?

If it brings down prices and encourages competition, I'm all for it.

As two elderly persons (one in their 90s) and on aged pension living in their own home need to use more electricity during the daytime especially in winter, it seems that not only prices are rising but special discounts are rare. A special bonus was given us for the past year but now it has come down 6% below that figure. Is there some body who can help keep the elderly warm and in their own home. After all the government want us to live in our own homes and yet we could have warmth in a serviced apartment or such which we would not like as we are fit enough to live in our own home for the time being. Any answers?

What about the energy price hike on 1 July 2016. Just received my latest bill from Click Energy and I see that Controlled Load price has increased from 7.2cents to 11.5 cents per kilowatt hour. That is nearly 60% increase. The All Day Usage charge has increased about 10%. How can these increases be justified.

This all very good, however if you live in a gated community you can have only the one energy provider that has the contract to supply to that community. And they charge like there was no tomorrow.

If all those that who have solar power were to unite could they achieve better consideration from Electric Companies

Monty

Worthy of consideration, it would not be out of place to target wholesalers and retailers in a dutch auction promising a thousand or more clients.

I doubt it.

Perhaps FiftyUp could get a deal going with Tesla, or, one of the other Solar Batteries companies, to Retro Fit Batteries for for those that have Solar Panels, already installed. The Tesla at the moment costs about $10,000.00 for a Retro Fit, That is the cheapest I could find from Bradnams. If thousands would sign up, it should be significantly cheaper. Appreciate any thoughts or ideas. Like West Australia, Regional Queensland are only allowed one company, Ergon.

I am sorry that I mentioned Bradnams, It should have read Bradford Solar, they are offering to retro fit a Tesla Battery complete with Inverter for $9900.00, it is beginning to get lower in price
