VEGEMITE

While there is a big focus in marketing on attracting millennials who seek innovation right now, older consumers’ preferences become more established as they age, proving our FiftyUp Club research that we are more brand loyal.

Unfortunately, this loyalty often isn't deserved. Take the example of a brand like Vegemite.Vegemite has a history spanning nearly 100 years. It was first developed by Dr Cyrill P. Callister, a young chemist from the Fred Walker Company. The Fred Walker Company would later become Kraft Food Company, an American manufacturing and processing conglomerate headquartered in the Chicago suburb of Northfield, Illinois.

My point is that baby boomers would be, on the whole, loyal to a product like vegemite even though it is now in US hands. This can be said for many name brands which are now produced by overseas interests.

It would be fair to say that Millennials' changeable brand "loyalty" helps keep brands honest. Millenials are more likely to purchase a product after reading positive on line reviews or because the product is purchased by their peers, therefore it’s “cool”.

Therefore, do you think it’s fair to make the assumption that baby boomers are more loyal to products because they, or their parents have used it for a long time and trust it?

I am also a baby boomer and remember all those great Aussie brands that used to fill the grocery stores. But now I have just about given up on buying Aussie. Eventually, it seems, that Aussie companies sell out to foreigners once we have provided them with enough support (by purchasing Aussie owned/made) to be able to sell out at a good profit to themselves. Where is their loyalty?

I am a baby boomer who grew up on Marmite and Aktivite rather than Vegemite and Milo. These days I eat both vegemite and marmite but prefer quality cocoa to Aktivite or MIlo. I do try to buy Aussie made/owned but when it comes to food, taste is the decider for me. I do not support Home Brand because I'm sure many of those products will eventually be produced overseas without too many people noticing. I'm happy to pay a bit more for what I like.

I stopped buying vegemite when I learnt that kraft is owned by an american cigarette company and also when it went the hallal route. I was recently given a jar of vegemite and I realise my taste has changed and I much prefer mighty mite now. Owned by 3m an AUSTRALIAN company.

I understood that Mightymite is made by Three Threes Condiments Pty Ltd that is a privately owned Australian Company? 3M Australia is a subsidiary of the US 3M.

Oh Barry..............You were reading what I wrote, not listening to my brain. Three three's , three m's,,,,,,,I was pretty close. I knew it was an Aussie company.

true, I buy vegemite because I grew up with it. However when owner ship changes hands the product often changes taste( because new owners try to make it cheaper to produce!!) Will not but then. Hense eventually all the loyal customers stop buying, So the reason for taking over the company because of loyal customers is all for nothing isn't ?

I now do not have vegemite in my fridge. I bought Australian lookalike. Took a little bit to get used to but now quite acceptable. I am trying to do the same in whatever i can do and also can afford.

Because it's not 100% Australian owned it's lost my loyalty, just sell Australia, get it over and done with, not a slow painful death.

I wish an Aussie company could reproduce the taste & consistancy. Unfortunately Dick Smith couldn't so I had to go back to Vegemite. Sigh!!!

I love Vegemite but come January 2017 when we lose our part pension will have to look for cheaper options and that might mean not necessarily buying Australian made much as I would like to

Right on Edward. You have picked all the healthy ones. The American food manufacturers have conned us. Canola, in it's natural state is acttually a poison that the insects and wild life won't touch so why is it being fed to us. And it's just one example of the con going on.
