Centrelink A Sore Point

In last week’s newsletter we shared member Noel’s story of frustration with Centrelink to apply for the aged pension. Noel obviously hit a nerve as your responses have been coming in thick and fast ever since.

This one from Ray:

Hi Kayley

In this week’s newsletter there is a post from Noel on the paperwork involved in applying for the aged pension. Whilst I found this relatively simple the big surprise is that after 4 months, nothing has been processed by the department and no reply received. I have visited a Centrelink office and phoned only to be advised all is correct and that the department has a huge backlog of applications to process.

I wonder if other members are experiencing the same delays. When January 2017 comes around I will be ineligible as the rules change but now I would be eligible.

I’m happy to report that just as we were about to publish the newsletter, we received an update from Ray…

Miracles do happen. We received a reply last night that the pension application has been approved as at the 1st week of April so it took over 4 months for a reply.

I work part time and my husband and I have been receiving part aged pension for two years. I have been randomly selected by Centrelink computer to provide our assets and income. This is compulsory. They want two years pay slips which apparently by employer must provide. Iam not impressed.

Centrelink are a pain. They have too many staff on contract or who don't care. My partner turned 65 in 2015 since then we have submitted paperwork 3 times.

Yes Kayley, That's fine to post comment. It is time that Centrelink sent to clients exact anticipated reductions to cllents based on their current situation, I am concerned about lack of information upon which to base next year's budget.

I have also had numerous problems with Centrelink. I applied for a low income health care card. The rules say you have to wait 12 months from retrenchment. You put the complicated forms in, and no advice is received from them. You ring up numerous times and get different answers. Eventually told you have to wait an additional 2 months and reapply. As a former businessman, the normal business model is never guess what is happening with a customer's filed send written advices. It seems Centrelink would stop a lot of unnecessary phone calls if they just sent written advices on a customer's application. Who is in charge of this bloated department??? From Brenton P, Hughesdale, Vic.

As I read this in centre link after waiting in line 1/15 now told it. Will be over 1 hour and he said we close at 4/30pm in now 3/40 only want to submit all my backing and super with all transactions for last 3 months only gave me 7 days to complete. If not in by today have to start again. This is a different place never bin here before Jeremy

My wife has just turned 65 while I'm 70. I've received 50% of our joint part pension entitlement for the past 5 years after providing all the required details of our joint assets/income at the time. We've kept these assets / income details updated with Centrelink over the past 5 years, needing only "proof of id" documents for my wife to trigger receiving her half of the part pension. We provided this to Centrelink 6 weeks before her 65th birthday, but it took them until 2 months after her birthday (with our persistent followup) to actually have the pension activated. Those follow-ups elicited the same message of under-staffing and large volume of similar work. I have no problem with the staff, as I blame the government of deliberately causing this with their ideological bent of cutting everything ...... except their own salaries & perks.

We will lose all our part pension on 1/1/17 but would like it if Centrelink could advise if we are going to keep getting medications at the $6.20 rate or do we lose all pensioner/seniors benefits.

You should still qualify for the seniors health benefit cards which will give you the discounted scrips and some other benefits.

We have had a similar experience with Centrelink and the pension. We submitted paperwork in February;and. eventually followed up with phone calls and help from our local member of parliament. We received the pension in June. The story of not enough staff and too many claims seems to be wearing thin. Maybe put on more staff!!!!!

Can't recommend "Age pension Solutions" highly enough they handle all paperwork and Centrelink contact and are so easy to deal with.
