NORTHERN TERRITORY (What’s on only)
Australia’s most northern and only tropical arts festival was born out of the destruction and devastation of a natural disaster over 40 years ago. Cyclone Tracy tore through the Northern Territory’s capital city on Christmas Eve in 1974 leaving behind 68 dead and 25,000 Darwin residents homeless. There was talk from some of abandoning the city site altogether but others were more determined to rebuild.
In 1977, Northern Territory Director of Health Dr Charles Gurd suggested celebrating the town’s revival with a festival that would draw the community together and reflect the optimism of those determined to rebuild. It’s on now - www.darwinfestival.org.au

This August, Independent Theatre is proudly presenting a special season of Thornton Wilder's The Matchmaker at Goodwood Institute Theatre.
The classic comedy was first staged at the Edinburgh Festival andTheatre Royal Haymarket in London's West End, before opening on Broadway in 1955 at the Royale Theatre, completing its run of 486 performances.
The wild success of the play led to two film adaptations, most notably Hello, Dolly!, with Barbra Streisand in the lead role.
However the play itself is still regarded as a far richer and funnier experience and the Independent Theatre is proud to bring it the stage once again.
The Matchmaker will play for a strictly limited season at Goodwood Institute Theatre. Performances will be held August 5th, 6th, 10th, 11th, 12th, and 13th at 7.30pm with Matinees on Sunday 7th at 4.00p,, Saturday 13th at 2.00pm and Tuesday 9th at 6.30pm.
Tickets are now on sale and priced as follows: Adults $35, Concession $30 and Students $18. Bookings can be made at www.independenttheatre.org.au.

Letters to Lindy 9-13 Aug 2016
The Playhouse, London Circuit, Civic Square
From sympathy to abuse, marriage proposals to death threats, over three decades Australians wrote more than 20,000 letters to Lindy Chamberlain.
Letters To Lindy paints a picture of an Australia that has a surprising warmth and empathy for Lindy Chamberlain. It’s this fascination that has marked her life as the defining legal and human drama of our time.
Do you know what we said to her? Do you know what we sent?
Holding the mirror up to our collected response creates a powerful portrait of the heartbreak, wisdom, and resilience of a grieving mother, and a nation that loved and condemned her in equal measure.
Filled with warmth, humour, and intrigue, this new work by award-winning playwright Alana Valentine (Run Rabbit Run, Head Full of Love, Parramatta Girls) puts the letters centre stage and lets us explore our obsession with one of 20th Century Australia’s most iconic figures.
It’s fascinating, it’s heart wrenching, it’s true.
