Saving Money The Lebanese Way
I am divorced now but I was married to a Lebanese man for 12 years. At the time it was a big cultural challenge for me, as I’m sure it was for the family I married in to.
I learnt so much from this family, everything from cherishing your older relatives in ways that so-called western cultures could learn from. I learnt you can eat raw meat and it’s called kibbeh nayyeh, I learnt a few Arabic swear words and I learnt how to save money when entertaining.
Almost on a weekly basis, my ex and I would visit one of his “uncle’s” homes for lunch. Dozens of people would come together and everyone would bring food. Some would bring one plate but most would bring several. Each aunty was known for her special dish and I would look forward to these events with great anticipation. Not only was it a chance to see everyone but for the children to play together and for the adults to catch up on each other’s latest news.
My family is scattered around the globe so my acceptance into my ex husband’s family was such a blessing for me and I miss them all still.
Back to saving money….. When everyone brings something, it takes so much pressure off the host with the added bonus of always having stacks of left-overs! The host would provide takeaway containers and everyone would take a selection of delicious treats home (saving money on meals in the ensuing days). I miss this part of marriage so much! Haha!
So my tip is, take a leaf out of Lebanese culture (and so many European cultures). Next time you ask people over, get everyone to bring a plate. Guests will always ask “what can I bring” when they are invited so let them share their signature dish with you.
If they don’t cook, they can bring the drinks! How do you save money when entertaining?
