NSW – King Kong (1933) Sunday September 25 at 2pm-State Library NSW

This is the Australian premiere of the digitally restored edition with soundtrack. From a modern movie-going point of view, the idea of a giant gorilla falling for a beautiful blonde sounds rather corny and silly, maybe even somewhat schmaltzy. But that's precisely the concept of 'King Kong (1933)' — a beauty and the beast tale with an adventure-fantasy-horror angle. From today's digital perspective also, the special effects appear more charming and quaint than astonishing and sensational. But released at the height of the Great Depression, this other-worldly spectacle of a herculean ape battling ferocious dinosaurs offered exactly the sort of visionary escapism the American public needed. For a moment, hardworking individuals paid to forget their economic hardships and retreat to a mythical island with wondrous beasts, turning this RKO production into a massive box office smash.

WIN TWO TICKETS by emailing kayley@fiftyupclub.com.au   (SYDNEY RESIDENTS ONLY)

Bollywood Comes to Canberra (Thanks to the Canberra Times)

There are few times and places in which a mass dance event seems appropriate, outside of a Bollywood film, that is.

But you'd be disappointed in yourself if you happened to be in Civic Square on Saturday (Sept 17) and didn't find yourself spontaneously joining in the free Bollywood workshop that's happening as part of the Confluence Festival of India in Australia.

Dancer and choreographer Gilles Chuyen has run mass Bollywood workshops around the world and will be leading the charge from 5-7pm in the forecourt of the Canberra Theatre.
