ABOUT COMMUNITY MARKET

At the heart of Community Market is an online op-shop where Australians can trade their second-hand goods while donating the proceeds to their nominated charity or community group. While Australians trade around $30 billion in second-hand goods to each other every year, the charity and community sector is not represented in that market. Community Market is dedicated to securing a portion of these sales for the charity and community groups who need it most, while at the same time, creating a national register of donated goods that can be called upon in times of crisis.

Australians buy around $30 billion worth of second-hand goods online, every year, but traditional op-shops and charities do not have a presence in this fast growing market. That means, while well over 90% of second-hand goods are traded online, none of the proceeds end up where they are needed most – in the coffers of the more than 600,000 charities and communities in Australia.

Founder of Community Market, Rob Keogh said the aim of Community Market was to give every charity and community group its own online op shop, where they can draw much-needed additional funds. “While there are around 2,500 traditional op-shops in Australia, none have any viable online presence,” Keogh said.

“That means our hard-working charities and community groups are not accessing the resources of the massive $30 billion second-hand goods economy. With Community Market, there is now a simple, safe and familiar way for Australians to trade their items and donate to charity at the same time.”

It’s easy to donate your items through Community Market, using a simple mobile application. You simply snap photos, enter a price and description and donate goods using your phone. You can nominate any community you like to receive the proceeds. Keogh said, community ops shops also have a role to support those in need, or in times of crisis. Community Market enhances this vital role by providing an online register of donated goods.

No use to me. No mobile phone or any way to take photos. I do however take things to my local charity shops. Think it is a good idea for specialty goods that might need to find a larger audience to sell.

Why would you go to all the trouble of advertising goods on-line and deal with picky buyers for the benefit of a charity? Anything I want to donate to a charity, I take to the charity, anything I want to sell, I sell.
