Minister announces New Deal for Seniors Card Holders

Judging by the amount of engagement on our facebook page, the fiftyup cohort are certainly enjoying social media. On the Fiftyup Radio Show we've spoken to Nan Bosler who is an advocate for older people becoming tech savvy. Nan says becoming computer literate isn't about being cool, it's about making your life easier when you consider that many government departments are now operating on line and who wouldn't want to chose that option over standing in the queue at Centrelink?

With that in mind, NSW Minister for Ageing John Ajaka announced today that NSW seniors are being offered an exclusive new deal on mobile phone plans as well as new in-store workshops to help people use the latest technology as part of a new partnership between Vodafone and Seniors Card NSW.

The Minister announced that Seniors Card NSW holders will be able to switch over or upgrade to any of Vodafone’s $40 or above handset plans or SIM only plans in-store, and receive the first months’ access fees free. Vodafone Australia Director of Sales Ben McIntosh said Vodafone wants to ensure seniors are getting the savings they deserve. “We know 78 per cent of seniors use their card every month to receive discounts and 77 per cent also use the internet daily,” Mr McIntosh said.

On applicable plans, customers will be able to make infinite standard national calls and browse the internet on their mobile device.

Vodafone will also be holding six in-store workshops for Seniors Card holders from November 2016. These workshops will be focused on helping older people better use technology, including making the most of a smartphone’s features, how to back up a phone, and security tips and tricks.

I'm interested to hear your thoughts on this. If you currently don't have a smart phone or internet connection, is this enough to get you started? What other initiatives would you like to see the government introduce? Let us know your thoughts below...

I have a senior's mobile - no internet etc. etc. on it and am fed up with Telstra insisting I join a $35 plan when they tell me that all National calls are free. Can you give me some good advice?

This article is a ripoff in waiting. Go with ALDI Mobile if you only use your mobile only occasionally or only for emergencies. Their "pay-as-you-go" call credits are good for ONE WHOLE YEAR which is perfect for those who rarely use their mobiles but keep them for emergency use only. The fiftyupclub list of providers promote only those with short term call credits, forcing users to pay up on a regular basis. This is a ripoff for occasional users like me. Am I missing something here IS THERE A VALID EXCUSE FOR OMITTING THEM?

Does the Fifty-up Club intend to investigate special deals for it's members after December regarding the cost of Electricity supply for people with solar panels fitted. You are no doubt aware that the Government is deleting the 60cent a Kwh generated subsidy, for power generated by solar panels in December.

That is great if you live in or near cities. Rural people cannot get a good service with any telco. Sylvia from,NSW

I have huge issues with a government department pushing deals on behalf of a public company, especially if the company is wholly owned by overseas interests! Apart from that, there's no way on earth I would consider Vodafone, my service provider is Telstra and I see no reason to change.

The comment below listed as Jim from NSW should be Margaret from NSW Many a time this club has changed me to someone else. This however is the first time I have been blessed with a sex change. Starting to feel rather butch already so must dash off and get a razor ready for the morning

Hi Jim/Margaret, it must have something to do with how you signed up to the club I think. Is Margaret posting from your account? Kayley

Great. Unfortunately I have recently signed up to NBN phone and internet and certainly can not afford a mobile as well, nor do I really need one. When I think I might think a thought in the next 10 minutes, instead of ringing all my friends to inform them of the greatness to come, I wait for the great event then analyse and usually realise it really is not worth sharing. If only many passengers on our trains used this method.
