I Don't Understand Boxing Day Sales

I have to admit something….I’ve never understood nor had any desire to be part of the Boxing Day Sales. As I kick back in front of the telly on Boxing Day waiting for the Sydney to Hobart to start or the Boxing Day Test there is always a news bulletin that pops up showing a bunch of people, faces pushed up against the main doors of David Jones, counting down to opening time. Once the doors open, they’re off! Running like a Kenyan on speed to the closest bargain!

I heard an interview last year with one lady who said "There must be good bargains, otherwise why would everyone be queuing?" Really? Sounds more like a case of FOMO – Fear Of Missing Out.

The first time last year shops all over the city were allowed to open, not just CBD and Bondi Junction retailers. I always thought that was strange..are city-dwellers and people in Bondi the only ones who like a bargain?

The combination of heavy discounting and expanded opening hours which started as early as 6am it’s a recipe for retail fever in some places.

Call it freestyle shopping…some call it a cultural experience.

Far be it for me to judge. If you’re into it..here are some tips from Tony Sutton, Myer executive general manager of stores who says Boxing Day offers "more width and depth" than other markdowns during the year.

Some of the best bargains at Myer and David Jones are in cookware, manchester and luggage – things you should never buy at full price these days.

For clothing, Tony suggests doing a wardrobe edit a couple of days before Christmas. Identify the gaps and only buy things that will pair back with at least three or four other garments.

Evening wear is the exception. If you find a great dress or suit on special, buy it – and use some of the savings to have it altered to your shape.

Other items Lewis recommends buying in the sales include good quality shoes, runners, denim, blazers (in classic colours and cuts) and active wear – especially if it helps inspire you to begin your new year training regimen……but that’s a whole other blog we’ll bring you in our first newsletter for 2017 which will be out January 13….the first Black Friday of the year! Have a great Christmas and New Year!

Went to Highpoint yesterday and it was terrible. Parking was horrible as we knew it would be we pulled into a loading zone near a lift to unload handicapped passenger and got booked . Fair enough but the option was pushing a wheelchair for miles, or blocking the road.. More care should be taken to prevent descrimination against the handicapped. Some might say we should not have been there but this was late afternoon and the crazy was over. Come on Highpoint make shopping accessible for all shoppers.liz

Boxing Day ought to be the best day of year to dress like the zombies just for the sales rush opportunity. What a fab idea.

How bout people dress like zombies and wait outside the stores pre opening....would send the door staff shrieking....they may not even open those doors at all for a while. Anny the normal shoppers though...heh heh heh!!!

Rather stay home and watch Walking Dead, though getting trodden on by unwashed, stampeding bargain hunters as the doors open, would be one of the closest comparisons to zombie attack that one could experience.
