Older Aussies not getting the Energy Discounts we Deserve

With heatwave conditions across the Eastern seaboard recently, energy prices again became the water-cooler topic-of-the-week.

But according to our current Fair Go survey, 1 in 3 over-50s are not receiving energy discounts despite more than half of us rating energy bills as our most stressful household bill.

Only 2 in 5 of us get over 10% discount, even though these discounts are easy to find!

We are now almost halfway through the Fair Go For 50Ups campaign, which is all about sourcing better offers on electricity, mobile and insurance - and already we are just 5000 people away from our target of 250,000 total members.

According to a respected survey many Australians have never switched their power supplier and even those who intended to change didn’t always get around to doing it.

The number who had never changed their providers, widely held as the simplest way to reduce your power bill, varied from 85% in Tasmania to 36% in Victoria.

In the most deregulated states some 55-60% intended to switch in the past three years but only 27% in Victoria, 21% in NSW and just 16% in SA actually managed it.

And interestingly the Energy Consumers of Australia (ECA) survey on the attitudes and activity of ‘small’, ie household and small business, consumers did find there was more satisfaction with energy services in those states which had been deregulated and open for competition longest.

So what is going on? When the survey asked how they ranked electricity in terms of value for money it came last behind gas and other utilities, banking, mobiles and even broadband.

One reason for this may be that electricity has been going up again in price, and gas is set to do the same, while those other services seem to have stayed fairly stable.

Another finding was that those who switched didn't seem to have any higher satisfaction in terms of value than those who had not changed.

It’s ironic because they had undoubtedly saved money on their bills perhaps it wasn’t much, perhaps they hadn’t noticed or perhaps as ECA suggest there are issues around the services on offer and levels of innovation

Our Fair Go campaign takes away most of the effort. You don't have to compare different tariffs we find one at a better price than you might as an individual and you compare with your current offer.

We can’t promise life-long satisfaction but many who’ve done it attest to the savings which are possible and there are many more satisfying things to spend your money on that over-priced electricity.

So it pays to be a little switched on to what electricity markets are about as a little effort and knowledge will save you.

Is any of this going to help us inWA,! As I do not think Wa is even deregulated?

I've just changed my electricity supplier from Click and amalgamated that with my gas. Result: a larger discount on gas (now 14%) and electricity (21%). This includes a 2% additional discount on both gas and electricity for combining with the one company. No lock in nor transfer fees if I decide to change in the future. Come on, FU ! Start working for us.

Anybody living in a dingle Perron household is almost always sub suffusing families and couples in everything from council rates to utilities including electricity. Due to standard supply fees payable even if you look up your house, travel as a grey nomad snd use little to no power. Sewage rates are terrible...I pay $80 a month and recycle almost every big of grey water and this is a lot to pay.

Something is clearly wrong here. Our electricity bill was $200 more this month & the highest it's ever been & we don't have air-conditioning just fans.

Interesting comment Roger which I totally agree with. I seems that FU isn't maintaining a watch and acting its members behalf on deals they have previously recommended (in this case Click). It's hard enough to compare electricity bills but it became blatantly obvious when pointed out to me that Clicks rates are above the major players and that they also charge nearly double the supply rate e.g. at .88c compared to others. So although I get 17% off as I pay on time (And they still haven't credited me for the last 2 months a problem I've regularly complained about) I'm really only get a discount of about 4-5% if that! FU please check and advise if your army of members should consider leaving?

Older Aussies quite often live alone and yet they still have energy costs as a family of two, three, four or more. I don't have a Dishwasher, Dryer, AC or a Fan. I have Solar hot water but I'm still having to pay over the odds.

I have no issues with my electricity bills. Last year I consumed 5000 kW, costing just $835 after a 12% discount. My small solar array produced 1/3 of my consumption, however, as I am still on a gross feed-in tariff in Canberra of 50 c, this reduced the bill by $957 before supply charges. My net payment for electricity was just $51.59 for the entire year

perhaps the FU should follow its own advice to members and switch energy offers now and again because there are at least three other offers better than Click at present. Why not choose a new supplier annually? Isn't that what your recommendation is that members should follow?
