Fair Go For FiftyUps Survey Results In

When we launch offers such as the Fair Go campaign many members are generous enough to fill in the survey so we can learn more about what makes you tick.

As we are about the reveal the offers early next week in terms of the power, home contents/motor insurance and mobile providers it’s worth seeing what you said.

Some answers are not surprising in that 58% find their electricity bill to be the most stressful given we live again in times of rising tariffs and uncertainty.

But on occasion there’s a bit more of an unexpected result. This time it was the one in four respondents who had never switched ANY of their energy, insurance or mobile services.

In some ways they reflect the situation with the general population as there’s about a quarter of consumers, it depends where they live and what service, who have never ‘played’ in the market.

While at FiftyUp we are in the business of switching consumers to better offers, and hence have an interest in promoting the practice, there’s no doubt it really helps control bills.

The federal and state governments develop much of their policy on the basis of ‘shopping around’ and positively encourage consumers to take part.

Electricity and mobile telephony and are two areas were switching has been made much easier with policies that make the businesses do most of the work in changing your provider.

There’s more work to do especially with insurance and banking but you only have to see what number portability has done for competition in mobiles to see what is possible.

Our  survey also showed too many people feel pressure meeting their bills with 46% saying it was ‘high’ and 13% ’extreme’.

In addition 88% of respondents admitted to making significant lifestyle sacrifices to meet these bills including 1 in 4 who take fewer or no holidays to stay ahead.

As these bills are regular and not one-off expenses it makes sense so far as is possible to get more control over them as opposed to the other way around.

And the best single way, and at least a good place to start, is to ensure you are not paying a zac more than necessary for electricity, insurance or mobile coverage.

You don’t have to be on the very cheapest because value, service levels etc do count as well as the price but avoiding unnecessary outgoings can only help.

Unless you are a very savvy or lucky consumer and have checked out the market regularly you are perhaps paying more than you need to for these must-have services.

The Fair Go for Fifty Ups campaign is just one was to see where you stand with these particular bills as it’s tripled-barrelled  there may be more chance you’ll find an offer which suits.

So if you are one of those who have never switched check out the details, we’ll make it as easy and quick as possible, and see how switching can save you money for something more interesting say, like a holiday.

I am also in regional Queensland. We are unable to switch electricity suppliers - stuck with Ergon who currently have profits in excess of $1 billion. Telstra is the only telco supplier in the area. NBN is an absolute joke - we will have NBN before 2020 apparently until then we have a mobile service which operates infrequently and no matter how much representation to these companies we cannot access any other services. Forget privatisation and give all Australians a reasonable service instead of the city slickers getting all of the benefits.

In regional Queensland we do not have the option of changing our energy provider, it's Ergon or nothing. Also in many places the only telco supplier is Telstra, many companies do not provide a reliable service outside city areas. This could be one reason for not changing service providers.

In Perth we have a choice between Synergy and er... Synergy. There is no choice as Synergy has the monopoly on the electricity market. Until Kleenheat entered the market a few years ago, Alinta had the monopoly on gas too. Thank goodness for Kleenheat who have provided competition and lowered gas prices. I'm still awaiting a competitor in the electricity market!

. . . . hope this gets to u! Switching Power Providers do u know why there’s a large percentage of people (like me) who do not take up ur offers of ‘switching’ electricity providers? My guess is that, like me, they cant find an end product result? What WE would like to do is quote u the amount of Kwh used with the cost for a 90 day period and ask u to return how u can reduce the cost? I’m not talking abt Bpay or On- time payments etc. but simply the 'cost Vs Kwh'. I guarantee the percentage quoted, in ur story will drastically reduce. Give it a go and prove me right. An honest provider wud return this request. G.C
