Meet the oldest Air Ambulance Nurse in Australia

Maureen Roberts has many career highlights to share from her 32 years as Australia’s longest serving air ambulance nurse.

In a recent interview on Macquarie Media, Maureen told the story of the pilot of her aircraft passing out at the controls and how she calmly popped his oxygen mask on and brought him around enough to land the plane. And you thought your job had challenges!

Maureen began her career in the Riverina and became interested in the Air Ambulance are speaking to a fellow nurse from the service. She started her career in Albury but is now based at Mascot, near Sydney.

Another memorable moment of her career involved a premature baby in the skies over the Hunter Valley in NSW. The Air Ambulance needed to land but a FA18 Hornet on “critical fuel” took precedence. Maureen remembers saying to the Air Ambulance pilot “the fighter pilot can eject if he needs to but we can’t, we need to land”!

One of the wonderful things about her job, Maureen told us, is that every day is a different experience depending on the patients you're transporting.

“Sometimes you're taking people home to die and they know they're going to die and they have the most amazing conversations with you."

Sarita from NSW it is very hard to pay for the things you really need and this sound like a big help. Someone was thinking about us, thank you so much

Hi Sarita, Thank you for your positive feedback! Many people have signed up to the FiftyUpClub and hopefully many more will do also. The more people we have on board the better the opportunity to negotiate discounts for future campaigns. Future campaigns will be advertised in the media so stay tuned and spread the word :-D

I agree with Anonymous re Insurance companies - I have now been forced to shop around for the BEST prices on all insurances for each renewal. I have owned my own home for 52 years & have never made a claim. Anonymous 2.

I agree with Carol from NSW recently my husband had an operation we were $3800 out of pocket, I know he will need another op later on how are we expected to pay. I also find supermarkets offering 2 for a lower price, it then costa more to purchase one, who needs two when there are only two of you

I would like for insurance companys that you have been with for many years, and that you never have had a claim, That there should be a scheme where you at least have a reduction in payments or perhaps be able to have a more expanse of cover without paying extra, for certain covers.

I agree with Lynelle of QLD - Medical Insurance should be designed for those over 50 - I recently had an operation and I still have to pay over $2000.00 over and above the little I received from the Medical fund to the Doctors .

I pay huge amounts of Medical Insurance and then can only claim small amounts in refunds. I would really like a plan that suits myself & my husbands needs specifically.

improved life costs, greater buying power, greater pressure on insurance companies to lower costs and improve services are just a few of my hopes of becoming a member of a large pressure group that hopefully will influence these issues for the better of all consumers.
