Meet the oldest Air Ambulance Nurse in Australia

Maureen Roberts has many career highlights to share from her 32 years as Australia’s longest serving air ambulance nurse.

In a recent interview on Macquarie Media, Maureen told the story of the pilot of her aircraft passing out at the controls and how she calmly popped his oxygen mask on and brought him around enough to land the plane. And you thought your job had challenges!

Maureen began her career in the Riverina and became interested in the Air Ambulance are speaking to a fellow nurse from the service. She started her career in Albury but is now based at Mascot, near Sydney.

Another memorable moment of her career involved a premature baby in the skies over the Hunter Valley in NSW. The Air Ambulance needed to land but a FA18 Hornet on “critical fuel” took precedence. Maureen remembers saying to the Air Ambulance pilot “the fighter pilot can eject if he needs to but we can’t, we need to land”!

One of the wonderful things about her job, Maureen told us, is that every day is a different experience depending on the patients you're transporting.

“Sometimes you're taking people home to die and they know they're going to die and they have the most amazing conversations with you."

The age of entitlement is over, well let's start looking at politicians entitlements shall we, the entitlements they have to have. They don't seem to have to budget to make ends meet, they will have an income when they are old and infirm because 'it's an entitlement'. Australia never was the lucky country it was always the country of hard yakka, the harder you worked the luckier you got. Then politicians steal it from you, that's called organised crime in some countries. How do you know when a politician is lying? when their mouth is open.

Something has to be done AND FAST to limit the Governments Red Tape and continually changing the rules for Self Managed Superannuation Funds. Why do they make it so hard for people who try to do the right thing and provide for their own futures and yet encourage people to lean towards an already overburdened welfare system when we just cannot continue in that direction.

Thanks god for what we have people. There are beggars all over Europe because no one cares . Yes... Even around the Eiffel Tower & all over Rome. The welfare system we have is humane at least . Hope we can keep it . Guess there is only so much to go around so being more careful where it goes will hopefully enable us to keep it.Wish the single mothers were left alone. Every parent knows how expensive it is to have children. I really don't think anyone would have kids for the supporting pension. The sound of growing children complaining cause they want more food would be terrible but I'm sure it happens.

If it's over for the taxpayer then common logic dictates that all entitlements for government are over too...let's start buy cutting income in half, scrapping super and all the perks of office as they are paid for by taxpayers of which I am (reluctantly) one..we cannot afford to pay anymore now we are getting less..

Barbara from QLD replied to Christopher:

I agree totally and have been on this for some time but there are no discussions on tv about it... no tv station is game to take them on I guess. What we need is a Robyn Hood in politics ..... take from the rich and give to the poor instead of the other way around!

we should give Clive Palmer a go, he's rich, yes But he is contact with us common folk

If the Government had the sense continue the Paul Keating model of of 15% employer superannuation all this rubbish of ageing population would disappear as they would be self funded.

I agree with your comments Cheryl. As far as age entitlements are concerned, I worked and paid my taxes for 40 years hence I believe that myself and others like me are entitled to some sort of benefit in their twilight years.

I Agree with you guys - one way out sack state politicians they do not do any good and we are then left with federal and councilors.

How can we take ANY of our governments seriously on their proposals to "cut" everything insight EXCEPT their own lurks and perks. Let's start by INSISTING they set by example and place the first item on their "Hit List" all the EX-POLLIES who still have their snouts in OUR trough. Then and ONLY then will I take any of their proposals seriously.....

They need to look at the huge payouts to young single patents who continue to have children for "a bit more money in the pocket" the people on social security because they don't want to work, not because they are unable, reintroduce national service and leave the aged pensioners alone. Most of these people have contributed to their aged pension through taxes

It appears to me that no matter what government is in at the time, they are out to create a welfare society so that they can have more control over the people......... am I wrong? By way of making people poorer in many various ways. Who runs the majority of household budgets ... certain types of responsible women do and manage to succeed on what little they have! Who runs the country's budget .... certain types of irresponsible men do and mismanage it ..... I thought these people are our best economists/financial advisers for the job......enough said! This is not meant as a sexist comment by the way. Doesn't matter what sex one is, AS LONG AS THE JOB IS GETTING DOWN RESPONSIBLY.
