Meet the oldest Air Ambulance Nurse in Australia

Maureen Roberts has many career highlights to share from her 32 years as Australia’s longest serving air ambulance nurse.

In a recent interview on Macquarie Media, Maureen told the story of the pilot of her aircraft passing out at the controls and how she calmly popped his oxygen mask on and brought him around enough to land the plane. And you thought your job had challenges!

Maureen began her career in the Riverina and became interested in the Air Ambulance are speaking to a fellow nurse from the service. She started her career in Albury but is now based at Mascot, near Sydney.

Another memorable moment of her career involved a premature baby in the skies over the Hunter Valley in NSW. The Air Ambulance needed to land but a FA18 Hornet on “critical fuel” took precedence. Maureen remembers saying to the Air Ambulance pilot “the fighter pilot can eject if he needs to but we can’t, we need to land”!

One of the wonderful things about her job, Maureen told us, is that every day is a different experience depending on the patients you're transporting.

“Sometimes you're taking people home to die and they know they're going to die and they have the most amazing conversations with you."

Reduced energy bills once the Labor Carbon Tax is abolished and competition between suppliers is stepped up.

I like a discount on living cost, electricity , car and home insurance ,petrol ,phone , all things that you use every day and yes medical and dentist wheir do i stop it goes on

Reduced cost of living in Sydney,its ridiculous. I am interested in any discounts for electricity, phone, petrol, vets, clothing,cheap products for house. Above all supermarket, petrol and DENTIST savings would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

membership of the medical fund we have been in for 35 years is no longer possible and will be the next thing to go, just when we need it; energy costs are horrific despite all our efforts to reduce them; insurance is thru the roof and getting unaffordable for us also $3000 annually for house and contents on a modest 2.5 bedroom home is beyond understanding.

Unfortunately am not old enough for a seniors card but am a pensioner. Would love a card similar to the seniors card to get the same discounts at hairdressers, supermarkets and other places that give senior card discounts. Anything you can come up with will be a help and greatly appreciated. Over 50's definitely are the most loyal customers businesses will get and refer friends to them. I do. Some businesses have loyalty cards maybe a 50's + card could have the same benefits.

We were empty nesters, but now we have the 2 kids living back at home - both looking for full time jobs and working part time but not paying any board. We will struggle but a discount on utilities would be good

hi its great to be part of the fiftyup club well myself and family do strugle to pay all the utilitys and insurances and petrol for the car im over sixty and the only one who has a job my son still lives at home he's unemployed at the moment look forward to herring from you craig

I have been a member of HCF for 50 years ,from my first day of work it is ridicules that paying $300.00 per month for top cover includes IVF and pregnancy when I certainly do not need them . It is getting very expensive to continue to pay into the fund when the gap is getting less and less. Hearing aid is beyond reach as the gap is quite expensive. Other living expenses are way too high.
