Meet the oldest Air Ambulance Nurse in Australia

Maureen Roberts has many career highlights to share from her 32 years as Australia’s longest serving air ambulance nurse.

In a recent interview on Macquarie Media, Maureen told the story of the pilot of her aircraft passing out at the controls and how she calmly popped his oxygen mask on and brought him around enough to land the plane. And you thought your job had challenges!

Maureen began her career in the Riverina and became interested in the Air Ambulance are speaking to a fellow nurse from the service. She started her career in Albury but is now based at Mascot, near Sydney.

Another memorable moment of her career involved a premature baby in the skies over the Hunter Valley in NSW. The Air Ambulance needed to land but a FA18 Hornet on “critical fuel” took precedence. Maureen remembers saying to the Air Ambulance pilot “the fighter pilot can eject if he needs to but we can’t, we need to land”!

One of the wonderful things about her job, Maureen told us, is that every day is a different experience depending on the patients you're transporting.

“Sometimes you're taking people home to die and they know they're going to die and they have the most amazing conversations with you."

I am hoping for some help when dealing with government , particullarly Centrelink , they treat pensioners like lepers, constantly threatening to cancel pensions if questions are not promptly answered and yet, they can take months to answer queries directed at them.. They advice us to use the telephone to speak with them, I have done this now 5 times in the last 2 months with an average wait timme of over 35 minutes, When I visit their offices, I am asked in front of many people, " how can we help you" they then expect me to discus my problems in an open area... This is humiliating Please have someone visit the Rockdale office and see them in action. When someone has worked for over 50 years, they should not be means tested several Tim's per year I

It would probably be easier to deal with them if we all left the country and sailed back in on a leaky boat, we'd get more respect. They tell you one thing and follow their advise then get a letter tell you that you tried to defraud Centerlink when following what they told you. I now get it in writing and get them to copy all forms and sign them as being received for my files. DOn't trust them!!!

A fair go from Corporations that certainly dont need to charge such high fees.

Reduced costs on dental and veterinary services would be a big plus, as would reduced insurance costs. Removing the low income allowance for pensioners is NOT something I expected from Tony and Joe, esp. after he bumped up the debt ceiling to $500 billion!
