Meet the oldest Air Ambulance Nurse in Australia

Maureen Roberts has many career highlights to share from her 32 years as Australia’s longest serving air ambulance nurse.

In a recent interview on Macquarie Media, Maureen told the story of the pilot of her aircraft passing out at the controls and how she calmly popped his oxygen mask on and brought him around enough to land the plane. And you thought your job had challenges!

Maureen began her career in the Riverina and became interested in the Air Ambulance are speaking to a fellow nurse from the service. She started her career in Albury but is now based at Mascot, near Sydney.

Another memorable moment of her career involved a premature baby in the skies over the Hunter Valley in NSW. The Air Ambulance needed to land but a FA18 Hornet on “critical fuel” took precedence. Maureen remembers saying to the Air Ambulance pilot “the fighter pilot can eject if he needs to but we can’t, we need to land”!

One of the wonderful things about her job, Maureen told us, is that every day is a different experience depending on the patients you're transporting.

“Sometimes you're taking people home to die and they know they're going to die and they have the most amazing conversations with you."

Making plans to move to Sulawasi permanently, greedy politicians have completely ruined this country. The harder I worked the luckier I got. These greedy bar stewards won't get a penny.

Forgot to include this. Why are all the ex Prime Ministers paid over $200,000 per year plus extras, cars etc.? What makes anyone think that they have worked any harder than I have. Governments are incapable of running a country dunny. I fear an internal rebellion, surely other baby boomers are feeling what I'm feeling. We are the generation who brought our soldiers home from Vietnam, we are the generation who burnt our bras, had waiting time for a divorce brought to one year instead of five, fought for the right for females to have an abortion or their tubes clamped without their husband's signature. We could do it again. WE are just older NOT DEAD. ck QLD

I totally agree. Instead of sitting & complaining we need to let our pollies know how angry we about the state our country is in. If people in other countries can do it so can we. Where are the leaders of the Seniors United party.

I have worked for 50 years and paid personal tax for 48 years because I had two children. Then my husband contracted cancer and died. I set up a couple or six hairdressing salons and put together a Family Trust for my kids and paid Company Tax for 28 years. I feel I am entitled to an Aged Pension without the scrutiny over the value of my home. I have spent my life securing my old age. I have ALWAYS been self sufficient, university educated my children who now have excellent positions and pay huge tax because of it. When I joined the work force Australia owned many institutions such as Commonwealth Bank, GPO, Shipping Lines etc. The governments have since flogged them off to bulk the bottom line. These were very poor business decisions by successive governments and they have nothing left to sell so they are going to knock of my entitlements now that I am almost 65. I am heartily sick of governments shifting the goal posts. ck QLD
