Remembering Our Diggers

It’s the 102nd anniversary of our Diggers landing at Anzac Cove and I was saddened to read about the warning from Veterans Affairs Minister Dan Tehan saying Australians need to be aware of the risks before travelling to Anzac Day commemorations in Turkey.

There are concerns the memorial at Anzac Cove could be targeted by terrorists, but Mr Tehan says that should not stop Australians from travelling there.

The minister said events held in Australia could also be targeted, warning those attending to 'remain vigilant'. Police have thwarted attempted terror attacks at Anzac Day commemorations over the last two years. The thought that these sacred events can be hijacked by others with their own ideologies is repugnant.

This week on the Daily Drive we spoke to Aussie performer Colin Buchanan ahead of a new release by Sony Music dedicated to our diggers. The CD is called Remembrance and it features songs and poetry that tells the story of our sacrifice in World War 1.

Colin teamed up with another Aussie music great, Russell Morris to write the song White Feather, the story of an Aussie branded a coward and handed a white feather. When he was found dead on the battlefield, he still had the white feather in his hand.

The CD also features poetry read by Alan Jones and the late Jon English as well as music by Lee Kernaghan, Sara Stora and Damien Leith.

There are no more World War 1 veterans still with us but Anzac Day marches across the country only continue to grow in size as relatives of the fallen are encouraged to march on their behalf, medals worn proudly on the right side.

We have a copy of the Remembrance CD to give away, if you’d like to win it, share your story with us about military service in your family. Whether it’s a long-lost relative or someone currently serving for this great country. Maximum 100 words. kayley@fiftyupclub.com. We’ll announce the winner in next week's newsletter.
