How to have (more) fun after 60
I don’t know about you but I love a laugh. I find a lot of things funny, even when I shouldn’t.
So does the Duchess of Cornwall apparently. Footage surfaced this week of Prince Charles and wife Camilla caught with a case of the giggles while watching an Inuit throat singing performance in Canada.
The Prince and the Duchess of Cornwall were attending a welcome ceremony in Iqaluit and were treated to a traditional performance as part of the country's 150th birthday celebrations.
The footage, shot on June 29, shows the royal couple struggling to contain their laughter as the singers performed the traditional activity.
I was in hysterics watching it also, partly because it’s a very unusual practice but partly because of the contagious nature of laughter.
Mark McKeon is a high performance coach and Collingwood Hall-Of-Famer. When I think of a high performance coach I think of a muscle-bound drill sergeant shouting orders at a pathetic underling…. then I found out that Mark had just turned 60 and is more focused on have fun than doing fifty sit-ups.
Speaking on the Daily Drive this week, Mark said the pace of life and constant connectivity has stopped people playing. With time pressures and high expectations, too many people are enduring life rather than enjoying it.
According to Mark, we need to start taking holidays, enjoying hobbies and just having more fun. Can it be that simple? Here’s a few of Mark’s tips:
- Look for the moon at 9pm every night for a month and marvel as it moves across the sky;
- Sing your favourite song loudly when you shower;
- Try to laugh more at jokes
- Learn one magic trick you can show to kids.
- Go to an embarrassingly bad movie.
- Travel somewhere new in your city, even just for an afternoon
- Take yourself on a dinner date and order something you normally wouldn’t consider.
- Make a daisy chain.
- Go to a free concert.
- Challenge yourself in the kitchen but making something new without a recipe. When it doesn’t work out, laugh at yourself.
