Aussie households set to freeze out of fear of huge winter energy bills

The Power Up and Save campaign survey has found that over half of our members haven’t run the heater this winter. All of this out of fear of rising energy bills.

The campaign was launched to help our members save on their energy bills. So far, over 17,000 people have joined the campaign, many of whom are struggling.

85% of those surveyed, declared they’re making sacrifices to afford their high energy bills.

  1. 53% stated they won’t run the heater, even though they are uncomfortable
  2. 42% said they’ll take fewer or even no holidays
  3. 38% will spend less on food and groceries

To most Australians unfortunately, making lifestyle sacrifices to afford energy bills is a very new phenomenon and one people are finding hard to manage.

Despite our lifestyle sacrifices we make, 35% of respondents claimed to still run a bar fridge which now costs on average $200 a year in electricity costs!

Is it time to get rid of the bar fridge?

FiftyUp Club spokesperson Chris Zinn today commented on the findings:

“Making sacrifices is a normal part of budgeting. However sacrificing the warmth of a home or the week’s groceries is a sacrifice too far.

“Sacrificing the bar fridge is probably a step people should take, however it may be a step too far for some.

“Fortunately it doesn’t necessarily have to be done.

“Making sure you’re on the right energy plan should be the very first step consumers make when trying to save on their bills. Joining a campaign like ours will help people do that.”

The FiftyUp Club has over 280,000 members nationally and uses their combined buying power to unlock special offers. It’s free to join at http://bit.ly/2ip7RtC.

HOW IT WORKS:

1. Families and Small Businesses can join the campaign for free at https://www.fiftyupclub.com.au

2. FiftyUp Club uses the People Power of 1000s of households who join to source group-discounted offers.

3. Households decide if the winning offers are right for them and can either switch, negotiate or shop around to save.

We have to freeze because the loony greens want green energy - meanwhile China is building so many coal fire for their energy recourses and yet we have all the good coal here in Australia and refuse to use it for our energy needs. Get out of the Paris agreement and get started on the cheapest and best energy means - COAL. Forget about the other countries they are the ones who need to stop all the pollution - NOT OUR TINY BIT IN AUSTRALIA - STOP THE BIG FREEZE AND GET THE COAL BACK INTO OUR ENERGY NEEDS. Angela NSW

A bar fridge is a handy stand by however if your budget really does not allow for the the cost of running one there is a good chance that you can not afford what is normally put in a Bar Fridge. Why not put a few bottles, a days supply or so in the kitchen fridge and turn off the bar fridge, leave the door ajar to keep it fresh smelling and only turn it on when needed. After all how many times do a dozen people dying of thirst, turn up unannounced at your door. As long as you have a couple of bottles chilled you will have enough time to meet the reasonable expectations of a few unexpected guests for whom a couple more bottles can be chilled as they enjoy what is already cold
