Janet Albrechtsen the latest to see the benefits of bartering

Well-known newspaper columnist and lawyer Janet Albrechtsen is the latest to discover the value of shopping around for cheaper power.

In her Australian Newspaper column published last week, Albrechtsen explains how she took the initiative and received a whopping 24% discount on her power bill by simply calling and asking her provider, AGL, for a price shake down.

What’s more, no new contract was required or sneaky fine print to decipher - all she was required to do in order to access the significant discount was pay her bill on time.

Easy right?

Get this… Janet went on to reveal in her piece that when she asked the friendly customer service representative whether lots of other people had been calling to demand a better deal, the response was – NO!

Well, “not many people”, was the exact quote.

Yes FiftyUps, we are entitled to blame energy providers and politicians for their role in price hikes but we can only blame ourselves for not being proactive and contacting our providers for a discount.

So it’s time we stopped complaining, picked up the phone or shopped around online for a better energy offer because there are real savings waiting to be had.

Take advantage of our Power Up and Save Campaign’s group discounts and enjoy exclusive member’s only energy offers.

By all means, ask your current provider if they can beat it.

As we wrote last week, 2 million of us are on dud deals. And what was our fearless Federal government’s solution to the problem? A measly letter.

So called crisis talks with big energy CEO’s proved to be a case of much ado about nothing with the outcome resulting in Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull requesting energy retailers to pen a letter to their respective customers politely explaining that, well, we were getting ripped off!

Talk about having it shoved in our faces.

Now with the longer days fast approaching and summer just around the corner, the energy price spike is set to prick even harder into Aussie households as we start blasting our air conditioners with reckless abandon.

As quarterly energy bills start landing into your letterbox, it’s important you don’t wait for your energy provider’s obligatory mail correspondence and start shopping around yourself NOW in search of a better deal.

Remember the life advice good old Uncle Joe imparted upon you all those years ago, “No one is going to help you but YOU!”

I got my bill 2 weeks ago & nothing had change on it, except the feed-in Tariff went up. My bill had 2 months prior to 1st July & 4-5 weeks after. I checked on last years bill at the same time, and the rate for energy use was the same & so was the daily use which I get 29% off on both. So with my Feed-in Tariff going up, my bill was cheaper this year. We haven't change any thing in the house & we are all electric, no gas. For 3mths it was $322.80. We are happy with that.

As long as you dont mind handing over your money to China through Alinta Energy...feel free. I prefer to keep the money in Australian ownership even if I pay more. FiftyUp is advocating selling off more of our country. You must feel so proud. I dont consider Alinta an honourable "good" deal under those circumstances as Chinese investment and ownership in Australian enterprises is already at an all time high and climbing. For those who dont know Alinta Energy is an Australian generation, electricity and gas retailing private company that is owned by Hong Kong-based Chow Tai Fook Enterprises.

Yes, Yes. How ever I doubt if ownership is what those running this 'Club ' worry most about.

Yep Janet I wrote a couple of weeks ago about ringing AGL and instantly getting a 22% discount and you have gone 2% better. Now until you are sure that the 25% is on all components of the bill do not budget for 25% less overall.
