Energy prices continue to dominate the national news cycle this week with all sides of government weighing in on the debate.

The Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull has been rubbishing “Blackout Bill” Shorten as he travels the eastern states promoting the Government’s response to rising electricity bills.

In Queensland, LNP Leader Tim Nicholls launched a broadside at Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk claiming “Queensland electricity prices are at record highs and families and businesses are hurting because of one reason only: Annastacia Palaszczuk.“

Meanwhile in Victoria we heard that more than 1000 Victorians a week are having electricity or gas disconnected.

For many Fiftyups, summer is the time of year when we get our biggest bills so now, as the weather warms up, it’s a good time to make sure you don’t spend a cent more than you should on electricity in 2017/18.

Thousands of FiftyUp Club members have now taken up our exclusive energy offers but it’s important to remember that while switching from a default standard contract to a market contract could lead to substantial savings, in some cases you could end up paying more if conditions such as paying on time were not met.

Offers should be compared via sites such as the government-run Energy Made Easy website but before you sign up to a new energy plan, the retailer must provide you with information in plain English so you can give your consent to accept the offer.

Make sure you understand the terms and conditions before you agree to an offer. Ask questions if you are unclear. If signing up online, make sure you read the terms and conditions before clicking to accept the offer.

You have the right to raise a complaint with your retailer if you are not happy with its service. Give them a call (your bill will have their contact number). If you are not getting traction with the retailer, you can escalate your complaint to the Energy Ombudsman in your state.

Yes, Australians have spent weeks discussing affordable housing, endlessly, pointlessly discussing affordable housing, and have now moved on to power prices. Now not only do power prices affect more voters, but in many cases a better class of voter, so now the government is taking a little more notice. Please, no one explain that no matter where you sit on the 'food chain' you still get ONE vote. Guess the next big pointless discussion will be Health Insurance, To this we are treated regularly, with exactly the same results ...@x&xz....all. Can not wait for the subject after that. Do hope it will be something entirely new as I am so, so bored with the well worn oldies.
