$700k worth of savings tips from the government

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you would have noticed all the talk about energy prices. If you have been off the grid (pun intended), there’s no hiding from your energy bill, which will find you eventually.

And so will the Federal Government’s latest $700,000 ad campaign!

Launched this month, the Powering Forward Campaign reportedly cost tax-payers $300,000 for 60 seconds of airtime during the AFL & NRL Grand Finals, and as much as $700,000 in fees to a Melbourne ad agency.

There's some useful information buried in there, but it's hidden behind propaganda pushing the government's energy policy credentials.

What do you think of the campaign?

Our take? The website contains some useful info for people wanting to save on power bills, for example it links to the Energy Made Easy comparison site and the Victorian Switchon site to compare offers.

It also contains energy efficiency tips for households, which can be handy.

But all that useful stuff is buried behind the silly “powering forward” slogan and some bumph about the Government’s Snowy Hydro 2.0 and gas reservation policies.

They’re important, but we’d like to see the moneysaving info up front and centre!

Here’s something else you can do to save.

A couple of months back, the Fiftyup Club started our Power-Up Campaign,  which now boasts a staggering 50,000 registrations nationally That tells us that you do want to do something about energy prices even if it’s just to send a message to power companies that enough is enough.

While Australia may rank second in the world for quality-of-life, we rate first in the world for the highest energy prices. Data from the Carbon + Energy Markets' MarkIntell service says we’re ahead of Germany, Denmark and Italy with 4 Australian states in the top ten (click here to see the list).

This despite Australia having every energy resource available in the world including coal, wind, solar, nuclear and sea-water hydro power.

What can you do? It’s as easy as picking up the phone, calling your energy retailer and asking for a better deal. Don’t take no for an answer. The energy market has never been so competitive and you can get results, with many members reporting savings in the hundreds of dollars.

I hope you can get business to recognise the over 50's as seniors as I went to a caravan and camping show and the price said seniors but because I didn't have a government seniors card I had to pay full price I thought over 50 would be a senior by now

mate, you are still a baby ! It should be over 60s club ! Over 50s are still able to get a job for at least another 10 years. Those of us over 60 may but most likely not. Anyone who is looking to buy a caravan as a toy doesn't need help in my book.

Hi Graeme, we agree that FfityUps are generally better customers and should be rewarded for being so. We also believe that all and any FiftyUp members deserve a good deal regardless of their financial situation.

Hey anonymous why so down on anyone that wants to enjoy there life hey . Why so negative all the time buddy ? Each to there own , If some oldies goal is to have a overseas holiday before they pull the pin good luck to them if they want to own a caravan as a leisure activity good luck to them , does it all have to be an even playing field to your ideals of what makes up an oldie . Some oldies may be better off than others so what that doesn't make them less entitled to there tax paying rights than some that are less well off they may just have had a little more luck or a higher paying job through there life or managed there dollars a little better than others may have . If these oldies can have a few final years of fun good luck to them . End of the day aren't we all in the same boat none of us have much time whoever can use it to enjoy themselves good luck to them . Regards Daryl.

In April I changed my energy supplier from AGL to Australian Power And Gas, my bill for electricity went from approx $300 per quaarter to $193 for a quarter. No change in usage or equipment. Now I have just received notification that AGL have taken over Australian Power and Gas, is there anything I can do, has anyone any suggestions.

I would hope that the fiftyup club could have those community members, over 50, who continue to contribute to society recognised, acknowledged and rewarded for the efforts and contributions through some tangible way that will assist them in the later years of there life.

Big Ticket items, such as Medical,Insurance for house and contents, CPT,Motor Veh., travel all need to be looked at for Retiress especially Self Funded. These items of expenditure have not been renewed due to increasing costs, these decisions fall heavily on Gov't resourses.
