$700k worth of savings tips from the government

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you would have noticed all the talk about energy prices. If you have been off the grid (pun intended), there’s no hiding from your energy bill, which will find you eventually.

And so will the Federal Government’s latest $700,000 ad campaign!

Launched this month, the Powering Forward Campaign reportedly cost tax-payers $300,000 for 60 seconds of airtime during the AFL & NRL Grand Finals, and as much as $700,000 in fees to a Melbourne ad agency.

There's some useful information buried in there, but it's hidden behind propaganda pushing the government's energy policy credentials.

What do you think of the campaign?

Our take? The website contains some useful info for people wanting to save on power bills, for example it links to the Energy Made Easy comparison site and the Victorian Switchon site to compare offers.

It also contains energy efficiency tips for households, which can be handy.

But all that useful stuff is buried behind the silly “powering forward” slogan and some bumph about the Government’s Snowy Hydro 2.0 and gas reservation policies.

They’re important, but we’d like to see the moneysaving info up front and centre!

Here’s something else you can do to save.

A couple of months back, the Fiftyup Club started our Power-Up Campaign,  which now boasts a staggering 50,000 registrations nationally That tells us that you do want to do something about energy prices even if it’s just to send a message to power companies that enough is enough.

While Australia may rank second in the world for quality-of-life, we rate first in the world for the highest energy prices. Data from the Carbon + Energy Markets' MarkIntell service says we’re ahead of Germany, Denmark and Italy with 4 Australian states in the top ten (click here to see the list).

This despite Australia having every energy resource available in the world including coal, wind, solar, nuclear and sea-water hydro power.

What can you do? It’s as easy as picking up the phone, calling your energy retailer and asking for a better deal. Don’t take no for an answer. The energy market has never been so competitive and you can get results, with many members reporting savings in the hundreds of dollars.

Geoffrey: I am also of the opinion we should wait and see, but I went a bit further: I joined The Seniors party (www.seniorsparty.org), they are looking at having representation in Canberra to allow them to fight on our behalf. Having both (this club plus the Party) makes me feel the wait will be long. What is your opinion here?

Henry
Henry from NSW replied to Henry:

Sorry Geoffrey, I meant to say "the wait will NOT be long. Sorry.

Some recognition from the Retail and Service Industrries that people over 50 DO actually exist and a discount on products as we've spent a lot of purchasing years over our lifetimes

I'd hope that a block of similar people would get a better deal from the insurance and energy companies who tend to rely on the difficulty in finding a good deal from amongst the choices available and only discount as a last resort.

Hi, hopefully discounts on house, car insurances, house hold electricity and car CTPs. These items seems to be sky rocketing every year! Thanks.

Would like to see petrol prices brought under control and limitations put on the duopoly of Coles and Woolworths who bump the prices up by forcing us to use shopper docket discounts.

William, I think something will come out of this club, You know why: because of the sheer number of people that have joined. This is why I also joined The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org) that are looking at being represented in Canberra. Again: only numbers will tell.

Cheaper prescription medications a discount on all our electricity rates etc essential services, I feel if you have paid taxes for over fifty years you should be entitled to some sort of benefits, we have gone without all our married life to save for the future and receive nothing.

I am hoping that in this our later time of life, some benefit of banning together, there may be some positive manner and suggestions of things to do to assist with a better quality of services and/or discounts that may increase our standard of living or at least be able to make it through without feeling like you are begging and always hope that our situation will not decrease any lower with the time we may have left. I have to admit where we are now, is not where we thought or hoped we would be, at this time of our lives (a dream is a dream but while there is hope there is that possibility of the dream be coming realty).

Henry
Henry from NSW replied to Lynn:

Lynn, I agree with you 100%. I also thought I would be better off. This club (I believe) will definitely assist us all and you know why: by the sheer number of members - numbers count - This is the reason why I also joined The Seniors Party (www.seniorsparty.org). They are looking at getting representation in Canberra to fight on our behalf. Again, numbers is what is needed here. Boy, I feel your words!
