$700k worth of savings tips from the government

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you would have noticed all the talk about energy prices. If you have been off the grid (pun intended), there’s no hiding from your energy bill, which will find you eventually.

And so will the Federal Government’s latest $700,000 ad campaign!

Launched this month, the Powering Forward Campaign reportedly cost tax-payers $300,000 for 60 seconds of airtime during the AFL & NRL Grand Finals, and as much as $700,000 in fees to a Melbourne ad agency.

There's some useful information buried in there, but it's hidden behind propaganda pushing the government's energy policy credentials.

What do you think of the campaign?

Our take? The website contains some useful info for people wanting to save on power bills, for example it links to the Energy Made Easy comparison site and the Victorian Switchon site to compare offers.

It also contains energy efficiency tips for households, which can be handy.

But all that useful stuff is buried behind the silly “powering forward” slogan and some bumph about the Government’s Snowy Hydro 2.0 and gas reservation policies.

They’re important, but we’d like to see the moneysaving info up front and centre!

Here’s something else you can do to save.

A couple of months back, the Fiftyup Club started our Power-Up Campaign,  which now boasts a staggering 50,000 registrations nationally That tells us that you do want to do something about energy prices even if it’s just to send a message to power companies that enough is enough.

While Australia may rank second in the world for quality-of-life, we rate first in the world for the highest energy prices. Data from the Carbon + Energy Markets' MarkIntell service says we’re ahead of Germany, Denmark and Italy with 4 Australian states in the top ten (click here to see the list).

This despite Australia having every energy resource available in the world including coal, wind, solar, nuclear and sea-water hydro power.

What can you do? It’s as easy as picking up the phone, calling your energy retailer and asking for a better deal. Don’t take no for an answer. The energy market has never been so competitive and you can get results, with many members reporting savings in the hundreds of dollars.

When I retired in 2001 I joined Advantage Seniors Health fund, has since been taken over by AHM. As from April I will be paying over $300 a month, can't afford to belong, can't afford not to! Margaret Springwood

Peter Dutton would be better off fixing the puplic health system, than cutting it so the people that need to use it can get a hospital bed when it's needed.Private health insurance fees are becoming much too expensive for a lot of familes through no fault of their own,and Peter Dutton should keep the battlers in mind.

Hi, it seems that I am the only one having trouble with the cost of the Local Council Rates. I have searched all comments here, and there doesn’t seem to be any comments on Council Rates. I left my comment on this subject some weeks ago, but I can't even find that. Am I going silly in my old age, or am I just Blind (or both Blind & Silly)? Why can't the different topics be in some easy to find alphabetical/numerical order? What doesn’t help is that I find this site is rather slow, even though I have a very fast connection, and as a result, it takes forever to go through the pages one by one, looking for relevant topics to comment on. My main concern with this site is the size and type of the font used. I would say at a guess, that most people that use this site (aged 50 and over), would be wearing spectacles of some sort, and already have some difficulty with reading, and having this sort of font doesn’t help their situation. I for one, have difficulty reading some of the text here, even though I have 20X20 vision, (when not taking my pain medicine) which for my age (75), is considered extremely good. Is there some way these problems can be fixed, or are we just stuck with them, like most of the problems that we must endure, because of our age? This might just be me, in my old age being hard to please and just being difficult, or do others think the same way as I do?

Hi Stanleyroy, Thanks for the feedback. We are still working on some aspects of the forum such as the font size and ways to search different topics to make it more user-friendly. However, you can now start a new conversation by clicking the "+ New Conversation" button on the forum main page. By doing this, you'll be able to see if any responds to your question. If you need any help with this please call 1300 969 382. Thanks, Jess

G'day StanleyRoy. Not sure which browser you are using to view webpages but most (if not all) give you an option to increase font size so you don't have to squint. I use Firefox (download it from Mozilla.com if you want to try it) & if you click the "View" button on the top of the browser, you will see the options to either "Zoom In" or "Zoom Out" (press the button as many times as you like until you find a font size that suits). Makes things a bit easier. Hope that helps.
