$700k worth of savings tips from the government

Unless you’ve been living under a rock lately, you would have noticed all the talk about energy prices. If you have been off the grid (pun intended), there’s no hiding from your energy bill, which will find you eventually.

And so will the Federal Government’s latest $700,000 ad campaign!

Launched this month, the Powering Forward Campaign reportedly cost tax-payers $300,000 for 60 seconds of airtime during the AFL & NRL Grand Finals, and as much as $700,000 in fees to a Melbourne ad agency.

There's some useful information buried in there, but it's hidden behind propaganda pushing the government's energy policy credentials.

What do you think of the campaign?

Our take? The website contains some useful info for people wanting to save on power bills, for example it links to the Energy Made Easy comparison site and the Victorian Switchon site to compare offers.

It also contains energy efficiency tips for households, which can be handy.

But all that useful stuff is buried behind the silly “powering forward” slogan and some bumph about the Government’s Snowy Hydro 2.0 and gas reservation policies.

They’re important, but we’d like to see the moneysaving info up front and centre!

Here’s something else you can do to save.

A couple of months back, the Fiftyup Club started our Power-Up Campaign,  which now boasts a staggering 50,000 registrations nationally That tells us that you do want to do something about energy prices even if it’s just to send a message to power companies that enough is enough.

While Australia may rank second in the world for quality-of-life, we rate first in the world for the highest energy prices. Data from the Carbon + Energy Markets' MarkIntell service says we’re ahead of Germany, Denmark and Italy with 4 Australian states in the top ten (click here to see the list).

This despite Australia having every energy resource available in the world including coal, wind, solar, nuclear and sea-water hydro power.

What can you do? It’s as easy as picking up the phone, calling your energy retailer and asking for a better deal. Don’t take no for an answer. The energy market has never been so competitive and you can get results, with many members reporting savings in the hundreds of dollars.

This will not effect us but I think it is disgusting. For the people who have tried and through no fault of their own just based on the huge rise in property values they suddenly have to up and move away from their homes and friends because you will have to move for the cost of a house to come down. Once again those how provide for themselves get hit. Maybe we all should have rented and gone on welfare!

Jane, it's politics that runs the country and makes the decisions that effect all of our lives. It's vital that these things be discussed.

Obviously you either don't own a home or it is not worth a Mil? I must admit I get tired of do gooders (not saying you are one) happily giving away my hard-earned but doing little to advance the country themselves...

Again we're back to politics and not trying to pressure the FiftyUp Club management into what they can provide and assist us with. Having 35,000 of us join up what for a political forum? (There's enough of them) As Paul suggested health would be a great place to start!

Ha! chance would be a fine thing if we qualified for any sort of pension/part pension. As self-funded retirees we are almost the forgotten people!

Can we please get a group discount offer on private health cover. Or at least a recommended health cover provider. The costs of comprehensive health cover are spiraling out of control.

Great idea!

Absolutely not. What was the reason we worked hard and saved hard, rearing children to have this happen. We voted Liberal, and felt this was the best. maybe not????

Next they will be introducing the death duties tax ,what next . I suspect sydney home owners will be disadvantaged unless they complicate things by having separate calculations for each state etc . What a can off worms this would create.

My wife and I are about to downsize from our reasonably large family home. It isn't overlly luxurious but, it is very comfortable and reasonably desirable to a future purchaser. This home was always going to be our investment for the future. Now we are downsizing into something smaller as a result of our forward planning. We are Pensioners and do not have large capital to fall back on. Don't let the Government or some Body take away something that should be an entitlelment to hard working, honest Australians.., through there early hard work.

I am a current Liberal Voter, but if the Coalition even thinks of including the family home as part of an assets test I would not vote for them and be very disappointed. My husband and I have worked very hard and have raised and educated 3 children without any help from government. Now we are retired and have a very small super. We rely on the pension. We have paid taxes since we were15. We have private health cover at great expense to us. Our home should be left out of any asset test
