Size Matters When it Comes to NBN

Are you confused about NBN speeds? You’re not the only one. In fact, NBN Co’s recent research revealed that two thirds of Australians aren’t sure what NBN speed they need. Gee, they’re making it easy for us, huh?

But it can be easy. In fact, for many Australians, choosing an NBN speed should come down to just one thing: household size. Know how many people live in your house? Of course you do.

SO HERE’S WHAT NBN SPEED YOU MAY NEED

1-2 people? Choose NBN 25

Also known as “Standard Speed”, NBN 25 is a great option for households of 1-2 light to mid-level internet users. It’s fast enough for browsing, emails, Facebook and even streaming Netflix, although it may struggle if you both want to watch different Netflix shows at the same time.

The great thing about NBN 25 is that we’re starting to see some internet suppliers offering it at a discount, as long as you’re willing to settle for a data limit around the 100GB mark. That’s enough for about 30 hours of Netflix per month, so you can still binge-watch The Crown.

2-4 people? Choose NBN 50

Got some birds at home who won’t leave the nest? Or are you a two-person household of heavy users? The more people who want to use the internet at the same time in your home, the more speed you’ll need.

NBN 50, also known as “Standard Plus Speed”, should satisfy all but the most large and demanding of households. You can have multiple people jumping on to stream TV, Skype, game, you name it.

NBN 50 is becoming a popular choice with Australian households thanks to a price cut earlier this year, so you should easily find a plan within your reach.

4+ people? Choose NBN 100

Also known as “Premium Speed”, NBN 100 plans are the fastest internet money can buy right now, and they cost about $20-$30 more per month than NBN 50. We’d recommend only investing in an NBN 100 plan if you’re a large household of heavy internet users, or if you need to regularly download or upload large files.

If that sounds like you, here are a few options to consider.

I am a single aged pensioner and enjoy my Optus Internet and telephone service. I do not have a mobile phone. I pay approx $50,00 a month. I do not wish to change. Or pay extra for NBN changeover. PP.

Thanks Jackie Dent for the article. I am 55 yrs old with a 17 yr old son and paying TPG 80$ a month with home phone and internet bundle. I am low user but my son uses a lot. I must check the speed of NBN as I do not even know what speed plan I am on. Very helpful article. Keep writing and educate us who find technological challenging

Having done some research around NBN installation and speeds etc I am unsure if the difficulties with NBN speeds have been rectified. NBN speed issues were also on the news within the past 12 months. Apparently those who had paid for higher speed were getting no extra speeds other than the lowest speed (due to problems with NBN) Telstra compensated those who had paid for higher speeds and did not receive the service they were paying for. Unless this has been rectified??? I have been advised to go with the lowest speed to begin with.

To have an NBN plan for internet connection, do I need to have a telephone connection as a bundled product that seems to be advertised by the majors including Telstra?

Hi! Most providers will have bundles and plans without the telephone too. Just let the provider know you do not need the telephone part.
