3 Easy Steps to Help You Connect to the NBN

Is the NBN in your area or coming soon? Whether it’s there or not, FiftyUp Club has compiled a simple guide to help you understand how to connect when you do need to.

CHECK IF NBN IS AVAILABLE IN YOUR AREA

This one is more straightforward than many people may realise. You don’t have to wait for a letter informing you that the NBN is now available in your area, you can simply jump online and head to nbnco.com.au. You can type in your address and see straight away if the NBN is connected in your area yet. If it isn’t available, you may want to sign up to receive an email alert from nbnco.com.au letting you know when it is.

CONSIDER WHAT YOU NEED

Everyone’s circumstances are different, so don’t forget that if you have specific equipment in your home, such as medical alarms, monitored fire alarms, etc, you’ll need to check with your the provider of your device as to whether connecting to the NBN will affect them. Plus, if your property has any additional outbuildings, such as a granny flat, it’s worth investigating whether you’ll need to extend your connection from your primary property to these buildings.

Also, whether you’re a homeowner or a renter, if you’re planning to move soon it’s worth checking whether your new property will be connected to NBN. If you’re going to be a renter, you may need to contact your landlord before you go ahead and connect to a plan.

PICK A PROVIDER AND PLAN

This is where you can really benefit from shopping around. There are now dozens of providers on the market offering very similar NBN plans, for dramatically different prices. Recent analysis from Mozo has shown that the pricing difference between NBN plans offering extremely similar speeds and services can vary hugely. So much so that the analysis indicated that by being on the best NBN plan you could save as much as $736 a year.

Rather than sticking with your current provider, see if you can get a better deal by switching to a new provider when you take up the NBN.

Hi. Thanks for your reply's Chris & Sandra. 1. Chris. Is Australia's NBN above anybody else in the world???? Just an update on our NBN folly we finally have it going after almost 6 weeks and it's great we've gone from almost 100. Megs per second download to wait for it ******* to 20. Mbs . I am ecstatic about the fast speed we get with the NBN. That's the highest speed we can apparently get. Whats that old add, NOT HAPPY JAN, KEVIN, JULIA, KEVIN, TONY,MALCOLM. SCOTT and the one that's next after SCOTT. 2. Sandra. Malcolm is a busy man he hasn't got time to go on the internet to see what is going on( just like his predecessors ) ) he has a personal staff to do all the internet rubbish that needs to be done and do you think that they are going to tell him that things are not working right with the NBN. Not on your nelly, they want to keep their jobs for as long as they can. Going by the list above it shouldn't be too long. Point Piper doesn't have fibre to premises they'd be on satellite to the what ever it is Like "the Block" where they get 7 to 800 Mbs. Yeah! I've had *$#@=% enough of all this NBN rubbish and going by all the comments so has everybody else. Regards John

Yes, you usually do. The easiest is to set up a Gmail account as it's always with you and doesn't have to be changed.

After connecting to the NBN through Telstra, my hands free phones don't work properly. One plugs in to the new Telstra box and works okay, but the second handset has never worked since the switch. If I call Telstra for a technical visit, I'll probably be hit with a charge of a couple of hundred dollars. Steer clear of the NBN if you can.

It only works on One Line. they will try to get you on All lines.. for a Fee.. Thats right.. :-(

I wouldn't recommend anyone connecting to the NBN unless you have Fibre to the kerb - our area was recently connected to the NBN and we were all encouraged to switch over. However we have Fibre to the Node or the MTM (Malcom Turnbulls Mess). The network drops out continually usually at the worst possible time - I stream TV and I also skype to family overseas and it is a complete frustration. I am paying a fortune to be connected and I have a 3rd rate network. Obviously Telstra know the NBN is unreliable because the modem switches to the mobile network when the NBN is unavailable - however this switch takes a few minutes so what ever you are doing is interrupted. Friends here who have fibre to the kerb have a wonderful service yet the rest of us have this rubbish connection. Trying to get onto Telstra is impossible - it took me 24 hours to contact them this last time - they promise to fix the problem and escalate it to the NBN - the NBN 'investigate' the problem and throw it back to Telstra who send out yet another modem. I am on my third modem in 4 weeks and have yet again been escalated to the NBN who supposedly will have a technician here this week. The technicians don't show - but say the problem is fixed and it all starts over again. I am about to disconnect and go back to using a mobile dongle but that will end my ability to stream TV. Its a disgrace we have to put up with this mess when the rest of the world has decent internet.

Yep I am having the same problem here. It was okay when connected in November 2017 but from April this year just drops out willy nilly and always when you need it most!! Not Happy!!

You'll just need to ask for a package or bundle without it.

We already have plan with Optus - it covers all landline calls plus computer data and modem, etc - so much per month. Do others offer the same coverage or how is it costed? We do not download movies etc. just have emails and sometimes search the internet. Thank you Merralyn McMahon mezzamac@optusnet.com.au

Ha! Good luck with the connection to the NBN ( NO BLOODY NETWORK) W had to switch by October 2nd 2018 or be cut off from the rest of the world, so we decided to start the switch on August 24th 2018. That's great enough time to get things straitened out. Well it's now September 28th 2018 and we have the NBN and guess what? yes the NBN Is not working as is should Keeps dropping in for a work then within a minute/ half an hour an hour it decides I'm going on holidays and I'll come back when I want too. Before this big load of $%^# we had a great service through Optus ( still With them) on their cable network without a problem. Now we go to NBN oh no We don't use the optus cable we go back wards to the old Telstra twin cable telephone line that was installed 30years ago ( Now that's progress or a cheap arse government. That's my bet) and as at today it's like being on dial up internet except you can't pick your time to dial in. So far we've have had 5 NBN tec's come out, 3 Modems and 1 pre paid wifi modem dongle thing that needs the internet to connect too (good luck with that) and a private tec to rewire from the old telstra line to the computer at a $ cost, and it still don't work properly( not his fault) . Any way we are still battling to have our internet and phone to be connected PERMANENTLY. What a great world of technology we live in It's great to be alive if only we can get CONNECTED. Good luck to all John
