Rising to the occasion: Your response to our call out for 'A-Team' role models

FiftyUp members have raised their hands to be part of our new A-Team, and that’s ‘A’ for ageing.

We invited you to send in your ideas and even volunteer for a profile as part of the campaign and the response is growing.

If you're just catching up, this was the blog which kicked it off: read here, and remind yourself of the wise words of the Global Centre for Modern Ageing in Adelaide.

“Modern ageing is a worldwide movement which recognises the welcome phenomenon of people living longer and shatters the myths about older people being out of touch and incompetent,” they say.

“Thanks to the breakthroughs in medicine and science people are living far longer. But modern ageing says our lives should not only be longer. Our lives should be fuller and better.”

Fuller, brighter and bigger are all changes for the best manifested is so many different ways by  FiftyUps members and we want to report, foster and help more of you be  part of the movement.

You don’t have to have run a marathon or even be especially fit you just have to have pushed the staid envelope society sometimes seems to slot us into.

My favourite example of this was when doing morning TV shows for our club the youngish producers would always put up images of grey-haired oldies bent double over Zimmer frames! I’d always try to explain that’s not representative of fifty year-olds or even many seventy year-olds these days.

Anyway here’s what some of you had to say about last week’s call out:

Terrific! Ageing and the care of the aged is a hot topic at the moment ... but is anyone listening? Too much talk and no action.

Phillip from NSW (although obviously another family member writing under his profile!):

Hi, happy to be profiled. I am a mum of 3, grandma to 8, wife to 1, friend to many, Australian Record holder in powerlifting, fitter and healthier than some my age, and still a work in progress. I am of the 1960 vintage and while I may be in my 60s, I certainly don't feel that way.

Stephen from NSW commented:

I do get a bit annoyed when younger generations vilify me for being successful when I see them going to nightclubs, dining out holidays and everything new and shiny. Seems like our generation did not have the opportunities or distractions that are available these days. Work life balance mmm. Work hard set your goals and go for it I say. I now have balance and am happy. In fact as I contemplate my history I have always been happy and made do with what was thrown my way. No complaints happy Boomer.

Roger from QLD commented:

I'm 62 and working fulltime, which my parents would have thought strange. We have 4 grandchildren who we are actively involved in helping to care for (take to school, dance lessons, etc) and we try to keep physically active and healthy as we anticipate that our current situation will continue for some time.

Start collecting your thoughts and in the near future we shall show you how to contribute and let you see each others’ stories.
In the meantime if you have any thoughts of this project and how we might run it, do let us know in the comments below or email us direct and more privately on contact@fiftyupclub.com

I turned 82 in March and wonder how I found time to do anything when I was still in the workforce. For the past 20 years I have volunteered with Marine Rescue, the SES, My local RSL Sub Branch as library assistant and committee member and I am President of my Probus Clubs and still enjoying life.
