Chip Conley piece for the week

There are many explanations for what we see around the world with the mobilisation of the middle (aged) in many developments such as the FiftyUp Club.

One is that they are feisty boomers refusing to grow old gracefully. Another is that due to comparative gains in medicine, prosperity and education have delivered them more in terms of health, dollars and ideas, and they have to do something.

One of those things we have partnered with is the Australian chapter of the Modern Elder movement. Its founder is Chip Conley, and last week I talked to him on Zoom; see link here.

Last weekend also via Zoom, Chip spoke with APAC, Asian and Pacific, members and others about cultivating curiosity and resilience.

If you are interested, this is briefly in dot points what I took away from it:

  • We have property insurance to protect our physical assets but no emotional insurance to protect ourselves.
  • Aged 40-60 is a challenging time for work, relationships, health etc. we need help to make the best of it
  • Midlife is a transition not marked by the rituals, rules and customs which define other changes such as adolescence.
  • Men tend not to be as adept at seeking ways through this change as women as not comfortable feeling vulnerable
  • Being curious is one of the best ways to live longer  and be connected to longevity
  • Resilience buys you time. Adaptability buys you a future
  • Every two years, try and achieve mastery/expertise in a field not related to your work but your passions.
  • Chip’s developing a regenerative, not retirement residential community in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
  • Being more positive and engaged with yourself, your community, nature etc. can deliver more healthier years of life than quitting smoking or taking up exercise*
  • The trick is to making ageing more aspirational. Having the mindset to take stock of one’s own life.
  • Wisdom isn’t taught. It’s shared.

If you think that’s BS or too good to be true, here’s a link to the Yale research:
