As one over 50, I’m halfway through experiencing what it is to be a ‘modern elder’ and discovering it's about better understanding the critical transitions of our lives.
The US-founded and Mexican-based Modern Elder Academy have come to Australia to help prepare us as the positives of later life are booming here too.

Thanks to Fifty Up’s connection with MEAx, the Australian chapter of the US pioneers in this area, I’ve been on Zooms with similarly-aged others for the past six weeks.
We’ve heard insights from the founder Chip Conley, joined in discussions live across the world and read into the wisdom of others about the mystery and mastery of growing old.
It’s a pilot designed to test the demand for a midlife wisdom school catering for Australia's growing older population and to quote from MEAx, "… many of whom question the traditional retire-at-65 model and look to repurpose their skills and reimagine the second half of life.”
My eight-week online course is called Navigating Midlife Transitions. We've looked through the lens of a ‘modern elder’ at the professional, psychological, physical and pandemic changes we are all experiencing in different ways.
These have included re-imagining careers, taking golden gap years, the need of leaving a legacy and finding more innovative ways to foster intergenerational connection as opposed to conflict.
It's leading up to three and six day residential workshops in the Blue Mountains behind Sydney, called ‘The Big Reset’ and ‘Flourish in Midlife and Beyond’
