We can never get enough money or at least so-called tips to help save it.

Last week's blog elicited some fun responses, including swapping eating out (or bicycled delivery) for eating in with so many lower-cost essential ingredients (bar lettuce) and BYO grog!

There's also much free money advice from various 'experts' who dismiss the conventional wisdom. One of them is Ramit Sethi, author of I Will Teach You To Be Rich

"…where most experts recommend something that sounds totally logical and reasonable — "Keep a budget!" "Stop spending money on lattes!" — but it doesn't work.
"Nobody keeps a budget. Spending $5/day on lattes is not going to stop you from retiring with millions of dollars. Deal with it."

So what does work? It's a cop-out answer, but it depends on you and your values and is perhaps generational. Last week Ian from NSW said he's in his 70s and not rich by any stretch of the imagination.

"(I) have found that life is too short to scrimp and save every cent then die and leave it to your children so they can spend it. If you like something and it gives you some pleasure, go for it."

Do you agree with Ian, and what are your money tips—both the habits you successfully adopted and those you didn't!

As much as any tips have to include elements of fun as opposed to self-flagellation, as you are more likely to stick with them, here's another Ian, this time from Qld, with his comments.

He suggests breathing less to please the 'Lettuce Party' on pollution and other heartfelt and heartwarming advice. "… stir your tea clockwise, don't go against the flow. Don't buy tea bags to save the planet on bags. Shower in the rain, how exciting. Don't watch TV, nothing on only bad news channels."

Ian, we have to take your word for it. Any other ideas out there, perhaps a little more practical or at least have worked for you?

I absolutely agree with Ian, except for the don’t buy tea bags & showering in the rain, but I’m not so sure about the advice from the so called “expert” you quoted that “nobody keeps a budget”!. Not great “advice” to a generation that already has a lax attitude towards money…
