Big thrills without the big bills

The Oscars were the hottest party in the world this week. We didn’t score an invite, but not to worry. We’ve put on our glad rags and gone in search of the best entertainment bargains in town. And the winners are …

1. See – and hear – the stars of tomorrow strut their stuff at free or ridiculously cheap student gigs at conservatoria and drama schools around the country.

2. You might be asked to laugh uproariously at the same joke six times, but joining a TV audience is a free day – or night – out. Pick a favourite show and contact your local TV station for details.

3. Can’t afford a trip to New York to see The Metropolitan Opera in all its glory? Don’t fret – The Met Live in HD is coming soon to a theatre near you. See here for details. Opera Australia also has cinematic releases.

4. Blockbuster exhibitions at major art galleries usually have blockbuster prices to match, but items from permanent collections are regularly rotated – and in many galleries free to view.

5. Many festivals feature free events, or last-minute cheap tickets.

6. Head online to see what free community events are coming up in your neighbourhood. Council-run websites feature event lists. In Sydney, look out for Seniors Week this month.

7. Most cinemas drop their prices one day a week to bring in the bargain-hunters. Smuggle in your snacks to save even more.

8. Big-name stars treading the boards for $20? If you can get your timing right, it’s possible at the Sydney Theatre Company. Melbourne Theatre Company and other companies also offer discounts.

9. The internet is awash with free entertainment, from catch-up TV such as ABC iView to YouTube (where you can watch the original BBC series of House of Cards for nix).

10. Be a tourist in your own city. Find the most scenic bus route in town and hop on. Or unfold a picnic blanket in a ridiculously picturesque spot and watch the world go by.
