How a bingle taught me to practise what I preach

My fellow members,

I trust you had a lovely Easter surrounded by loved ones. And for those of you a little lonely during these times remember we at FiftyUp are always here for you.

My message to you this week is that I am about to practise what I preach!

Somebody scraped the side of my car last week while it was parked and failed to leave a note with contact details (don’t you just hate that).

The damage was relatively minor, and I am one of those people who likes things fixed straight away.

I am lucky I have a friend who is a panel beater who will look after me price-wise.

The problem is that the amount is just slightly less than the excess allowed by my motor insurance company, so it’s coming out of my pocket.

But after 30 years of loyal custom and no claims to my name, I feel I deserve better.

So I am going to switch.

I am in the process of shopping around while the car is in the workshop.

It may seem like a minor thing, but I have been inundated with messages from you telling me of similar experiences, particularly with health insurance.

These are the times we need FiftyUp power in numbers.

As you know, our Health Insurance Petition calling for greater transparency in the cost of private health cover has now closed. Our target was 10,000 signatures, you smashed that in two days, and we now have 13,404 and more than 2500 comments, which I hope to personally deliver to Health Minister Peter Dutton sometime soon, hopefully before the Federal Budget.

It’s a number he will find very difficult to ignore.

Finally this week, it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge our fine Anzacs.

April 25 is our occasion of national remembrance.

During the services at dawn and later the street marches I ask you to look at these men and women with different eyes this year. It is a day when we reflect on the many different meanings of war. Just look at how many of them are older than 50, have served our country with pride and dignity and are now doing it tough financially because of their age.

Just like you and me, they deserve better.

My Warmest Wishes,

John
