Cheap Mobile Phone Plans

FiftyUpThere are more mobile phones than people in Australia, according to the latest research from the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). In fact, there are approximately four phones to every three people. That’s a lot of phones.

While Telstra and Optus largely dominate the market, interestingly there are more than 200 licensed carriers and service providers.

So, this should mean greater competition and better outcomes for consumers? You bet, competition continues to grow and here are few plans we think are worth looking at:

  • Aldi offers a range of great deals from $10 to $35 with different limits on calls, SMS and data depending on your usage.
  • Amaysim has an unlimited talk and text plan for $39.90 per month including 4GB data and runs on the Optus Network.
  • Yatango on the other hand allows you to build your own individual plan. You set your own sms, call and data usage limits and then Yatango adjusts its prices accordingly.

So what’s the catch? You’ll need to BYO mobile phone and not be locked into an existing  contract to take advantage of some of the cheapest deals out there.

It’s common, particularly amongst Gen Y, to pay higher call, SMS and data rates by locking into a plan with the latest smart phone, rather than buying a phone outright.

However, the above offerings show that buying a phone outright could save you mega bucks in the long run.

Of course it’s worth investigating and reading the fine print as a lot of these plans may charge more for overseas calls and extra for additional data usage.

So while no plan is perfect for everyone, like anything we recommend shopping around, doing your research and see what’s right for you. It’s important to know what you’re getting yourself into.
