How to Rate your Electricity plan

save_electricityIf it’s not broken, why fix it? When it comes to electricity, the answer is simple. It could save you money.

If you’ve been with the same provider for years, or simply want to check that you’re not paying too much, below are some questions you should ask your retailer (and what their answers should be).

 1.   What discount am I on? Is the Discount on all or part of my bill?

Many plans don’t come with a discount at all so first thing is to make sure you get a Discount. Nearly all providers will offer them, but sometimes you have to ask for it. Be sure to know exactly what your discount is too; a good discount is off both your usage (the power you use) and supply charges (the fixed daily amount).

2.   How does my discount compare to other discounts in the market?

A good discount differs from state to state due to factors such as competition in the market. While Victoria offers some of the biggest discounts, their rates are often higher as their market is deregulated. There are a range of government sites that let you compare discounts and rates, including Energy Made Easy in NSW, Your Choice or SwitchOn in VIC, and Price Comparator in QLD.

3.   Does a fee apply for exiting my contract early?

You know you’re on a good deal when the plan has NO exit fees, which means you can switch at anytime if your rates increase or if you’re simply unsatisfied with your provider. Exit fees are capped in Victoria but can be as high as $100 or more in other states.

4.   Will I receive hard copy or email bills?

Talk to your provider about what works best for you. While the trend these days is for email, we think you should be able to receive hard copy bills if you prefer.

5.   What payment methods can I use?

Check with your retailer to see what discounts they offer for different payment methods. From direct debit discounts to pay on time, it’s worth double-checking with your provider to see what they offer.

Switching electricity providers doesn’t have to be difficult.

Switching, or the readiness to switch, is what gives households power. It only takes a few minutes to complete your part of the switching process online or over the phone. In a recent survey 86% of switchers said the process was “easy” or “very easy.”

At the end of the day, St Vincent de Paul estimates some households could save as much as $710 a year by switching to a more competitive offer – so we think it’s worth investigating.

We get a gas bill and also an electricity bill and its with the same company AGL but yet we are always charged 2 service fees every quarter which seems very greedy of AGL

I need to reduce our bills as we are paying around $300 per quarter via Origin.

Why doesn't fifty up club do a deal with a reputable supplier like Red Energy. I was tempted to take up the fifty up club deal with Click so did a lot of research, talked to Click , did total bill price comparison based on actual bills and sent them a detailed email to get written confirmation that what they said is correct. Guess what. The prices that they came back with are exactly 10% higher than the prices available through the fiftyupclub web site. They claim I was using GST exclusive prices so I double checked. No I'm not. Seems like they had an overnight 10% price increase. In answer to my question about prices and discounts being firm for at least 12 months they replied "rates are subject to change and if they do we will notify you". That's big of them. Changing to Click will save me nothing and probably cause a lot of pain. They have more tricks than Houdini.

Please advise the rates you will charge me. This rubbish about "9% Discount" is just a scam otherwise you would up front with the actual rates. Get real or get out.

Jess Lindell's article, "How to Rate your Electricity plan" misses the most important point, that being the charges per kWh in the different categories. I compared my existing bill with Click's rates, and theirs were dearer, so even after the 15% "discount" (I don't do DD, for anybody!) they offer, it would not be anywhere near a significant saving.

I wish I had read these posts before I joined Click. Although it took ages to finish with AGL and then got my first bill (quarterly not monthly as was supposed to be) I was shocked to find it as almost $1600.00. AND that no discount is given, it is held over to the next bill!! Must have missed this in the small print. Now that I can see that so many others are disappointed with Click, I will keep reading and see if there is one provider that others are happy with. Maybe I should have stayed with AGL. Happy to read what others have to say.

Ornella...I totally agree! Received my first bill from Click and nearly hit the floor with a total of $1,400 for just 2 people. The dearest bill I've had in the 30 years I lived here and that was when I had 2 teenage children. Very disappointed in what I believe is total deceit despite their declaration of 'giving over 50's a go' so changing providers again is the only solution.

Anonymous I must admit my bills since the first have been very reasonable, my last being the highest since the first bill ($880.00.)There has been a price hike and everyone is complaining so I will keep an eye out on consumption. I just don't understand how we use so much.

I am no longer interested in the Fifties Up Club, Coles or Click. Just a rip off and scam

The Over Fifties Club has a $100 Coles Car insurance $100 saving guarantee, This false and misleading. I was offered half with a higher excess. Why go to the trouble like this and be caught out?

Joel - FiftyUp Club from QLD replied to Bruce:

Hi Bruce, If you don't at first get a quote that is more than $100 cheaper, you need to keep going through the process and apply for the $100 price beat guarantee.

Bruce
Bruce from QLD replied to Joel - FiftyUp Club:

Joel, I have, Coles is hopeless and will not deliver the $100 guarantee. Tell me who has received it?

LS
LS from VIC replied to Bruce:

Hi Bruce, You may have a case with ACCC? After all, if Jeff Kennett and ACCC can successfully haul Coles to the Federal Court for misleading advertising regarding its bread "baked today" and "freshly baked", then this warrants similar attention.

There are better deals around. Don't go o Click. Click is just one bing Government Sponsored Scam.
