How to Rate your Electricity plan

save_electricityIf it’s not broken, why fix it? When it comes to electricity, the answer is simple. It could save you money.

If you’ve been with the same provider for years, or simply want to check that you’re not paying too much, below are some questions you should ask your retailer (and what their answers should be).

 1.   What discount am I on? Is the Discount on all or part of my bill?

Many plans don’t come with a discount at all so first thing is to make sure you get a Discount. Nearly all providers will offer them, but sometimes you have to ask for it. Be sure to know exactly what your discount is too; a good discount is off both your usage (the power you use) and supply charges (the fixed daily amount).

2.   How does my discount compare to other discounts in the market?

A good discount differs from state to state due to factors such as competition in the market. While Victoria offers some of the biggest discounts, their rates are often higher as their market is deregulated. There are a range of government sites that let you compare discounts and rates, including Energy Made Easy in NSW, Your Choice or SwitchOn in VIC, and Price Comparator in QLD.

3.   Does a fee apply for exiting my contract early?

You know you’re on a good deal when the plan has NO exit fees, which means you can switch at anytime if your rates increase or if you’re simply unsatisfied with your provider. Exit fees are capped in Victoria but can be as high as $100 or more in other states.

4.   Will I receive hard copy or email bills?

Talk to your provider about what works best for you. While the trend these days is for email, we think you should be able to receive hard copy bills if you prefer.

5.   What payment methods can I use?

Check with your retailer to see what discounts they offer for different payment methods. From direct debit discounts to pay on time, it’s worth double-checking with your provider to see what they offer.

Switching electricity providers doesn’t have to be difficult.

Switching, or the readiness to switch, is what gives households power. It only takes a few minutes to complete your part of the switching process online or over the phone. In a recent survey 86% of switchers said the process was “easy” or “very easy.”

At the end of the day, St Vincent de Paul estimates some households could save as much as $710 a year by switching to a more competitive offer – so we think it’s worth investigating.

Click is a rip off scam merchant. I have been with the for 12 months now and moving on. Click issued credits when I threatened them and re-invoiced. Click admitted they needed to upgrade their billing system. The Qld Ombudsman has alot of complaints from Click customers. Click made mistakes on their invoices always in their favouur. I still haven't received credit for the Carbon Tax from 1st July 2014. Also, the the $50 rebate fr being with them 12 months from July 2013. I just deducted a months Carbon Tax an the rebate an Click threatened me with debt collection and putting a default on my credit record. Be very careful giving Click your auto debit details. You will be ripped off and scammed. Bruce

Gday Bruce, Click Energy has said it will refund the carbon tax component during this month of October. See here: https://www.clickenergy.com.au/about-us/news-blog/killing-the-carbon-tax/

Also there was nothing anywhere on my bill that says I got any sort of money back for the carbon tax I was charges from 1st July, instead it is still telling me, 3 times, on my bill that NSW Government estimates that the carbon tax and green energy schemes add about $332 a year to a typical 6.5Mwh household bill!!!!

I was very disappointed with Click Energy. My bill was the highest it has ever been, and I have solar power, which we use through the daylight hours, and pay for power at other times. I discovered that the 3 rates of price per kilowatt hour for our smart meter, were much higher than most of the other suppliers and their Daily Supply Charge was also higher than the other suppliers. Instead of saving me money it cost me money. I have already switched back to AGL, and on my last bill I will save $60 per quarter. Unfortunately I will have to get another quarterly bill from Click, before I can change.

I switched to Click Energy through this site some months ago, Their billing system is ridiculous carrying over credits and monthly "estimated" bills. It's a pain to keep track of. Also I notice that the 15% discount was quickly eroded by a 5% increase on the 1st July. The whole electricity market in NSW is a joke which is why I'm selling up and going bush, I'm over it it's just another con.

Hi Paul, In a significant Carbon Tax Reduction, Click Energy lowered prices by an average of 7.5% in NSW and backdated the cuts to July 1. If you're having trouble with your billing and you'd like us to have Click check your case, please email contact@fiftyupclub.com.au

If there is a carbon tax reduction then I haven't seen it (promised by the 14th October) now I have the latest bill that has a 4 level pricing system plus off peak plus two lots of daily charges. You people should be taken to the cleaners your a (poor) joke,

Joel The Energy Regulator range me on Monday 6th October 2014 asked me for my permission to refer my compliant to the ACCC as they agreed with me that you were not making adequate disclosure of this penalty. If I disagree with you I will always tell you about my concerns and further I will tell you what outcome I am seeking. Now all I want is for 50 UpClub to present its promotion of this offer honestly. I do not believe that is very hard to achieve. I will even write the acceptable text for you Plan features 17% discount off total electricity bill (both usage and supply) when paid by direct debit except on your final bill where this discount will not be applied. or No Lock period and no exit fees except for the loss of the pay on time discount on your final bill. This is too easy....

Well, I switched to Click and my average cost a month is around $75. Please tell me, who lives alone, that this is a good deal ? :( Deana

Joel - FiftyUp Club from QLD replied to Deana:

Deana, they send you a monthly estimate and then a quarterly bill that actually reflects your real usage. If you'd like them to reduce your monthly estimate because it's too high, they will do so if you ask. We can also help if you email us at contact@fiftyupclub.com

I changed to Powershop from Click Energy a couple of months ago, having previously been with Origin and AGL. I have not been satisfied with any seller in the past, but Powershop is a total change, I am spending much less on energy, solar tariff has not reduced, I know all the time what I am spending, there is NO contract and I can buy discounted power in advance. Powershop is THE BEST! Brian Dodd Victoria
